Not sure if anyone has covered this topic or did any do the diy? Found it on the E90 Forum. They all had mixed emotions: Some say it made a genuine sound diff; some feel you lose HP; some had no change to the sound. It is called the golftee mod. :fencelook:

330i Valve

this mod is for the 330i it can't be done in the 325i, However I'm not sure is posible in the 328i and 335i you will have to see for your self.

I don't know if some of you as notice that the muffler have a valve that close at lower RPM and opens at higher RPM.

well I did a little mod so I can have the valve open all the time = depper and louder sound. :rocks:

what you need :
-3 zip ties
-something to cut the end of t zip ties.

DIY time: less than 5 mins
cost: less than $1 (I got a bag of 10 zip ties in wallmart for 96 cents)

ok this mod is easy to do and reversible so if you don't like it you have nothing to loose ( well the $1 & 5 mins of your life )

steps:

1- wait for your car cold down, you don't want to touch the muffler hot!! I learn the hard way I totaly forgot about it, hurts like ...

2- get under your car and locate the muffler valve. (hit: is in the muffler left tip) ( see picture)

3- there is going to be a small black hose on the top of the valve just pull it off.

4- fold the hose and use the zip ties. ( see picture)

5- cut the extra of the zip tie and make suret hose does not touch the muffler.

6- turn your car and listen the difference

the computer will not show any errors or anything so everything is

Has been covered. I did it on my e46. Purely for sound purposes. Has no effect on back pressure. Gives a deeper sound on lower RPM. Thats all

Yup make no difference to performance, just makes the car sound better and deeper. It is a lot nicer I can tell you, mine even has a little overrun in first gear which sounds awesome

I wanted to it but no need the valve stays open and the pipe is still connected. Its not stuck I checked.

That is good, had the same on my car when I got it. From what I could see it uses some electronic valve to actuate the vacuum to the valve in the exhaust, an this seem to be faulty, not that I mind

Just checked mine on the 330, also seems to be stuck in the open position. But it still sounds too sedate at idle. I think the e46 330i sounds better at idle and lower rpms than the e90 330.:fencelook:

Looks like i need to have the exhaust done soon, what are my best options for a good but unobtrusive sound with a decent power hike?

I also did it when I first got my car.

When you start up - the valve does default to the open position. It comes into effect when cruising at partial throttle openings (I remember reading on an overseas forum that the valve opens when the throttle is open greater than 15%).

It does give a slightly deeper noise low down & you hear the exhaust a little bit more on the highway, although it is not intrusive.

I reckon it's worth it. For me, it eliminated the rattly mechanical noise everytime it opens and closes when driving though the suburbs.

And the gargling on the overrun is addictive :joy:
