330i Coolant light

Hi guys

Lately I've been having an issue with my car. The engine coolant light seems to always come on when revs go above 3000rpm. Its not overheating at all and have been pouring coolant and water.

Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?

Thanks.

Does the system require constant topping up?
Any signs of visible leaks?
Common areas to check will be the plastic expansion tank and water pump.
Doubt it will be a faulty sensor as that will be on from idle.

Is it E46 or E90?

its a e46.

Do the white splatters in engine bay have anything to do with it perhaps?

White splatters mean you have a coolant leak :thumbdo:

Check all the radiator hoses, expansion tank

From past experiences that seems to be the mileage where the cooling system starts getting temperamental on these cars

It's usually the radiator or the expansion tank. Also check the expansion tank cap.

a good radiator place can do a pressure test for you....that will indicate the leak...then take it form there.....

Its the shaft seal on the water pump that is leaking, water leaks out onto the belt and is flung all over the front of the motor, seen it many times.
If you take the water pump pulley off and look at the back you will see signs of water leakage.

So gents, whats the worst that could happen to my car with this issue?

It will eventually start overheating cause the one thing will lead to another and before u know it you blow the head gasket or even worse you warp your head.
Fluid loss in the cooling system is not to be taken lightly.

Well I can smell the coolant while driving. I will fit a new expansion tank tomorrow. Thanks guys.

By the way, which is the correct coolant to use for a 6cylinder e46? Red, blue or green?
