7/4/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

All re-engined F3x models will get new designations:

Model name change for the re-engined F3x: 328i (N20) -> 330i (B48), 335i (N55) -> 340i (B58).

4-cyl B48 engine will have 330i/430i designation instead of 328i/428i
6-cyl B58 engine will have 340i/440i designation instead of 335i/435i.
PHEV F30 will come as 330e, not 328e.

I hope to have more detail on this development later.

Some of you may remember me from the crazy bmw.com-sourced pre-prod info dump in early 2013. I found another source. It's very limited this time: just the model, engine, and transmission type, and lists not only the models that are guaranteed to come, but also all those that BMW considered as a possibility (for example, the list includes both RWD and xDrive, manual and auto US F31s). The list is exhaustive as of:

February 2014

(if a rumored vehicle is not on the list, it probably didn't exist as a finished engineering project at that time).

This post is updated every few months, with fresh info added and the officially announced vehicles removed.

FAQ:
Can you tell me when these models are coming out?
- Yes, see latest update.

Can you tell me which of these models will come to market, and which ones we'll never see?
- No.

What options will be available on these cars?
- No clue.

Can you tell me where you found this info?
- No.

This is just the US market, EU is simply too varied to type in all combinations.

12/31/13 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

This is based on December information.

BMW is going to significantly expand their plug-in hybrid offerings, utilizing something that looks like a completely new powertrain. The following cars are listed now:

F45 223e SAT xDrive, manual and auto. There's a new engine code, XB2 1.49 M0. No idea what it is.
G11/G12 740e/740Le RWD, auto, engine XB1 1.99 O0
F30, 328e RWD, manual and auto, XB1 1.99 M0

New versions of the cars listed previously (again, this is US specific):

G11/G12 750i/750Li, RWD, auto
F48 X1 28i FWD, B46B20O0, manual and auto

New car:

F57 Mini Cooper Convertible, same models as F56 above.

3/1/14 UPDATE

- X4 M40i, N55B30T0, manual and auto

--------------------------------------
3/2/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

- BMW M2, N55B30T0, manual and auto

(Yes, same engine as X4 M40i, so I'm guessing 350-360hp?)

--------------------------------------
3/9/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

The following list provides better future visibility, but should be taken with a grain of salt: its reliability hasn't been tested. I believe it's best to consider this as "BMW's best laid plans". Also, no transmission information is available. Again, this is US only data. PM if you need EU data. Confirmed or disproven info is marked accordingly.

F22 LCI SOP 07/16, EOP 10/20. Re-engine with B46B20O0 for 228i and B58B30M0 for M235i.

--------------------------------------
5/5/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

Production dates for M2:

EU/UK: 11/15 through 10/18
US: 3/16 through 10/18

Change of plans in regard to US 320i: it is possible the LCI will continue with N20.

--------------------------------------
5/24/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

I'm seeing more evidence that US 320i will not get the new B48 engine at LCI. So, F30 re-engine for the U.S. looks as follows:

320i - never
328i - MY2017
335i - MY2016

--------------------------------------
6/24/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

Production dates for X4 M40i: SOP 12/15, EOP 3/18.

--------------------------------------
7/4/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

Independence Day Special!

All re-engined F3x models will get new designations:

4-cyl B48 engine will have 330i/430i designation instead of 328i/428i
6-cyl B58 engine will have 340i/440i designation instead of 335i/435i.
PHEV F30 will come as 330e, not 328e.

Too bad the 340i doesnt have a 4.0l V8 though :(

I feel your pain. It makes sense for the last two numbers to indicate displacement - and its got to be a V8 if its a 4L. :)

But... The new generation of engines are good too - B38 & B48 as fitted in the new Mini. (The 3 cylinder actually sounds a little nicer than the 4 cylinder - something to do with similar acoustics of a 6 cylinder.)

Its sad, but generally NA is on its way out of the mainstream automotive world. :(

Here's how I see it... Yes we all love the old six cylinders that BMW made 10 years ago. But that was 10 years ago. If BMW continued making those type of engines they'd be so far behind the curve you might as well buy a Mahindra or something...

The current engines that BMW make are masterpieces in their own right. Sure perhaps they might not last as long as your M52/M54, etc but that's the way of the world now. All manufacturers are driven by cost and efficiency... Thus everything becomes smaller and gets a turbo...

I'm the first one to support old school BMW... Look at what I drive  but there's no denying that these new cars are also impressive...

For those that miss the howl of the old N/A 6 cylinder... That's what the used car market is there for and there are still some real gems out there!

What they should've done is keep the 320i a 320i and then call the 328 or 330 or whatever the hell it is now the M320i.

What has this world come to?

A 330i with a wheezy 4 cyl engine:yuck:

But why would they want to do this I mean why rebadge the famous 335...

If you look through time every new 3 series came with a new high end badge:

Highest for E30 : 325i
Highest for E36 : 328i
Highest for E46 : 330i
Highest for E90 : 335i
Highest for F30 : 340i

I was actually surprised to see they didnt have a 340i at launch..

The major difference here is that up to when BMW built their last proper car (e46) the badging actually represented the displacement of the engine. Ever since the e90 it just became a number to show which one can piss the furthest

They might just as well start naming the cars in the following way:

316i = 3.1
320i = 3.2
328i = 3.3

330i = 3.3 version 2 :roflol:

One day we will all drive electric cars with a soundtrack to simulate the engine noise of your choice.

In the EU, is has already been legislated that electric cars should make some noise that pedestrians can hear as the car approaches. Apparently some people have stepped off curbs not hearing the Nissan Leaf or some other soulless vehicle approaching....:thumbdo:

Cool sales trick as always.. :=): Many a BMW driver would not be caught dead in a x35 once the x40's are out - it's a matter of perception. BMW's way of getting the last E9x and F30s off the road once the LCIs hit the floors.

thats the reason iam gonna hold on to my iconic bmw M3 3.2 and that cherish the beautiful sound that it makes at 8000rpm

Yeah its the same as BMW marketing the new 4pot turbos as "twin power turbo". I can not tell you how many times I've heard guys with the F30 320i/328i say their car is twin turbo....lol. Obviously for bragging rights at the local pub "twin power turbo" sounds better/bigger than "turbo"........:biglol:

There's twin power turbo and twin turbo power. Twin power turbo = twin scroll turbo. The other is fairly self explanatory

Why on earth would they rename it just after releasing the M235i? :thumbdo:
May as well have made it M1/240i.
Now the 340i will sound like it's faster than the M235 :bangdesk:

Had difficulty "accepting" the 328i badge being a 2ltr turbo 4-pot, but to see the 330i badge get this engine... :fencelook:

Granted, BMW model numbers have not always been a true reflection of the engine size, but this is getting a bit out of hand. :nonono:
