Thank you for the positive comment! I think this car will be a serious handful with software, it's already quite powerful

So on Monday I decided to take the bumper off, check how to remove the foglights, clean the intercooler, and just check things out in general. Yes I know, this isn't normal. lol

On to the pics

After watching a 3-minute-long youtube video, I set about removing the bumper. Pretty simple, but tedious.

Bumper off

I found a tracking device on the crash bar. Can I sell it or do something cool with it?

20141103_182107.jpg

I then removed the wire splice and wrapped the wires with new insulation tape. The OEM tape was wearing out on two spots.

20141103_183549.jpg

Here's the tracking unit.

20141103_185342.jpg

Intercooler out. It uses the same spring clips as the newer VAG boost pipes, pretty easy to remove.

20141103_193028.jpg

The location of the intercooler, pretty nifty design if you think about it. I need to log air intake temps to see if I need a bigger 335 intercooler.

20141103_193036.jpg

Here we're looking at the hot-side boost pipe.

20141103_193048.jpg

And the cold side boost pipe. The seals on both pipes are still in very good condition, same type as the VAG cars.

20141103_193109.jpg

20141103_193117.jpg

Intercooler through-shot. It wasn't really clogged, but the cleaning did make a good visible difference to the permeability of the light.

20141103_193210.jpg

Here's a peek inside the one end-tank

20141103_193243.jpg

and the other... Looks great! I wouldn't mind being an air particle and passing through this thing.

20141103_193258.jpg

Then lots of prepsol went into the intercooler, and I left it there for around 30mins while I went inside and had supper and some coffee. Came back and hosed the crap out of the IC.

20141103_194349.jpg

This is some of the stuff that was stuck between the intercooler and radiator cowl. A lot less that I was hoping for.

20141103_195647.jpg

Then on Tuesday night I did the CDV delete.

20141104_181357.jpg

And then all of 5 minutes later this is what I was looking at. I spilled about 4 drops of brake fluid. I know this because all four were caught by my hair... Joy.

20141104_181426.jpg

As it should be!

20141104_181403.jpg

The view from the one side

20141104_181501.jpg

And the other side. It's such a small hole, I can only imagine how much this restricts the flow if you look at the size of the slave cylinder...

20141104_181535.jpg

Another view without flash.

20141104_181551.jpg

I then cleaned these plastic covers, there was this hard baked-on layer of oiliness and sand. Sis.

20141104_192407.jpg

And all done.

20141104_183935.jpg

PS, I cleaned the crash bar, the ram tube thiny and pretty much everything I couls get my hands on. I also removed the foglights and realised I need to get some wet sand paper and give them a once-over along with the headlights. There are no cracks, just some pitting. The yellow lamin-X will also look way better on a clear lens.

Regarding the CDV delete, BMW's should never, ever, ever have a CDV!!! The clutch engages so much better, the drivetrain backlash is gone, and I can shift faster, and (this may just be my imagination) I swear the clutch has a lot more bite. Hands down one of the most necessary things to do on a BMW.

Indeed! I'm gonna meet up with Andy, I don't know if my "tappety" sound on idle is normal. If it isn't I'll have to save up and get everything ready for head removal and lifter replacement. I also want to get alignment and balancing done sometime

It's either the oil causing the loud lifters and or a combination of 10ppm diesel. I use LM 10w40 and 50ppm (every other tank 500ppm yes this is the good stuff :) )

Ons sal lekker gesels wanneer jy kom kuier.

Awesome! Ek het Motul 10W40 ingegooi, dit was awesome op my Sportline en ek vertrou die olie. Ek dink Motul en LM is die enigste twee vervaardigers wat nuwe "pure" olie vervaardig?

It's a curse! I love getting to know my car inside and out. That way I can diagnose problems easier and also know how to do proper maintenance on the car.

Ash has let me know that the 330D M-sport springs are out of his car and I can collect them from him! :yay:

In other news, I did a foglight restore and put some yellow lamin-x on them for scene points and looking cool. It will also protect the lens, so it's a win-win.

On to the pics:

Before, sandblasted, but the pitting wasn't really that deep.

Sanding with 1200grit wet sand paper and sunlight liquid soap

20141111_185753.jpg

Just comparing after the first round of sanding and with a light polish with my orbital polisher

20141111_191612.jpg

A pic of the colour of the light. It hasn't changed drastically which is nice. Just subtle and I like it.

20141111_214841.jpg

This is a close-up of the foglight when on. There is some residual glue marks that will hopefully clear out with enough heat cycles. My phone's camera has messed with the colour, both are the same lol

20141111_214849.jpg

And the other side

20141111_214910.jpg

And some more pics...

20141111_214954.jpg

20141111_215009.jpg

And the final result. I'm pleased with how it came out. Nice and subtle, but different to the norm.

20141112_075250.jpg

I still don't have my numberplates, the temporary one has expired on the 9th already and the useless car dealership just isn't bothered about it.

My friend Irfaan also came over and we did a cam swop on his 1.4 Velociti. It took longer to do the foglights than it did to do a complete cam swop on his Velociti

Thank you for reading :ty:

I also saw a forum member today on John Vorster. Had BMWFanatics sticker in the rear quarter window.

Nice job on the foglights :praise:

Thank you! :=):

I noticed that the car is using oil. It hasn't shown any signs of smoke or leaks, so I think I need to take a look at the crank case breather - this is apparently a common issue on some of these motors.

You in the Centurion area I see, think I spotted your car the other day

Could be! Where did you see me? The car is filthy because of the rain :blueCry:

I did give the car a nice wash, polish and wax on Sunday, so cleaning it should be easier now.

I was driving down lenchen avenue, not sure if it was you, no stickers on the car. I was in the silver Accent. I tried to pull up next to the 330d, but I seemed to have been looking for parking instead :biglol:

Thanks for the link!

My car doesn't smoke at all, just using oil. It may not hurt to take that breather filter out and see what it looks like

Probably worth changing that breather. Dealers don't change them ever. Just like the dealers don't change fuel filters due to them being 'lifetime' parts :RedNo:
