330d Vs 435i

A Friend of mine and I are having a discussion.

He has a 2016 330d, and his mate has a 435i which he drove for the first time
yesterday. He claims his 330d is faster and will be quicker off the line.

I'm telling him he is smoking his socks and that 435i will most defiantly but
in front , off the line and at any speed.

Has anyone had any real world experiences?

I read once in Car Magazine that acceleration to around the 100km/h (iirc) mark is down to torque. Thereafter, wind resistance rises exponentially and sheer power (kw) is needed to overcome that.

So in theory, the 330d should be quicker of the mark than the 435i because of the higher torque output.

But... it's never that simple:=):

The higher the torque figure, the more available to spin the wheels / early activation of the TC system.

but iv ran a few modified diesels while stock and they just get a "jump" during a rolling run, but 98% of the time the petrol stays ahead and pulls away

I raced a F30 330D from stand still with my then stock 335i n54 e90 and was in front all the way.

my e90 330d and a e90 335i. both stock

335 stayed ahead all the time,even from standstill.

so should be the same on the f range

You can't compare 2 cars as you don't know how much power they are putting down stock. You might take one 330d down but the next one could bite you. Same holds for the 335i.

What I can say.. my 335i loses a lot of traction on hard launches even with my brand new tyres, so I guess the 330d should do the same but the moment it runs out of the torque band the 335i has the advantage depending on how strong the 330d is.

My 2c and yes I have launched a few diesels. Lost badly to a X5M50d on just a launch and short go. Too much torque. :roflol:

Never raced a 330d but have driven one. They seem quite quick. Make most of their power low down after that they loose their legs

I think this has slightly answered the question for me, depends on the length of the run and the launch. In that video if the the drag was a bit longer I am sure the M3 would have opened a bigger gap.

While the 30d might have more torque, at the end of the day all that matters is what you can put down and on a smooth road my 335i will still struggle with wheel spin in 4th gear so I don't see how more torque would help in a drag.

I think maybe if you don't launch the 35i and you're both in comfort mode or something the 30d might get the jump. The 35i needs to be revving quite high which would be very unlike the diesel so perhaps it just came down to the way your friend drove it if he's used to a diesel.

its also fair to say that turbo diesels give a different "impression" of speed than a turbo petrol because of the way they deliver their torque. so the 330d might seem faster.. but realistically, with a stop watch.. probably not

my veedub TDI would cream most cars off the line initially, but once the petrol's got into the rev range, i'd be looking at their tail lights the rest of the way

Jumping out of an M135i directly into a 2015 330d, I don't see how the 30d will be quicker at all.

Don't get me wrong, the diesel gets out the blocks very quick, but the N55 is quicker.

Ive never had any issues with f30 330d's in my 235i
had a nice run from a toll a few weeks ago, by the end of 3rd it was light poles..
had a few more runs on the highway after that and the outcome was always the same

It won't take down a 135 and Def not a 235 because of weight and power difference. 335i and 435i will struggle with the 330d at first but like u say, once in Rev range the 330d will struggle to keep up. But the 330d is the best compromise as its plenty fast and economical all at the same time.

See'ing your sig, i think you are a bit biased , I think the 435 will be in front from launch till the end of time.

Buddy my stock 335i n54 beat a F30 330d of the line, he never got ahead.
