330D E90 SMOKING

Hi Guys!

Hope everyone's doing well.

Need some advice please.

Driving a E90, 330D, face lift, started smoking on a cold start up with a strong smell of "burnt" feul. the colour of the smoke is white. It also does do a bit of a misfire as well, after a few revs and a bit of warming up of the engine, smoke clears up and misfire goes away, drives as usual. Once at work car stands for about 8 hours and when I start up again, same story as just mentioned.

I have been driving much shorter distance as I have relocated, previously doing 35km from home to work and again 35km from work to home. Now I'm doing 8km to and from work. (not sure of this makes any difference???)

Thanks for any advice!

Have a An awesome weekend!

A friend of mine had a similar issue on his 320d (N47T), white smoke on startup and a 'choppy' idle. Was resolved by removing and thoroughly cleaning the intake manifold, EGR, swirl flaps etc.

Thanks for the reply, spoke to a mech, taking the car to him next week, he reports it could be a leaking valve...will keep you guys updated. I'm hoping its not the turbo??

I've had this issue before.

Opted to try a can of diesel system cleaner (went for the Liquimoly option) and this resolved completely.

Perhaps worth a try before you start chucking big money at it.

Hi Guys, quick update, mech was not able to fully diagnose the issue as his assistant didnt pitch to work, however he thinks it may be the EGR thats faulty....he estimates 6k...Cant I just remove it all together???

So generally on these cars you would want to (at higher mileage) remove the cat and fit a DP, software for management of this and some performance gains :) then while they do this the norm is to also blank and code out the EGR, check and also maintain or remove swirlflaps all together (there is a kit for this also) and then run diesel cleaner in the car every 5/6 tanks to maintain and keep the injectors clean and free of soot and build up.

I had the EGR in my C250 CDi done at Merc at around 98000kms due to the car not being driven much by the previous owner but my BMW diesels have never complained of this before but also dependent on driving style of the car. have you tried diesel clean in the tank on the car yet?
Call Ashley from @Xcede Performance - get his views on what could be wrong and try get codes read first (diagnostics) on the car and send this to Ashley. He will then advise you better on the actual issues coming out of the codes that are present on the diagnostics.

Thanks for the reply, I'm not very clued up on all the tech stuff, however from previous reading I am thinking about removing the EGR and CAT, putting on DP and doing the software

Good choice to do that but first up you would need to make sure your car is healthy because when you put software, more power is made and it shows the weak spots easier BUT then it makes your journey of modding a bit frustrating. Best bet is to ensure the car is healthy and issue free and in this case, get the diagnostics run first then fix what is the smoking issue, if it is the EGR and hardware based then it can be resolved all at once.

ok...I just contacted a company in Mossel bay, they come highly recommended, they are called R-Tech Mossel Bay. They have quoted me R6330 to remove the EGR and CAT and do the software which will include the EGR and CAT delete and do the updates...any thoughts???

Thank you, your reply makes perfect sense! I will first get a diagnostic done before I do anything

No idea who they are, I would check with Xcede rather... they are well known, have very good credentials and specialize in BMW as well.

Hi Guys, Just a quick update, so I took the car in for a diagnostic, not a single error detected! "Eish again", the Mech suggested putting in liqui Molly diesel treatment and doing a 100km stretch and see what happens. He thinks it may be a faulty injector....

Hi

Look around the injectors to see if they have any blow by. It will be wet with an oil like substance OR if they have been leaking for some time there will be a black tar like substance around them.

Did they check the injector values on the diagnostic?

Hiya, Thanks 4 the reply, I did not have a "BMW" diagnostic done, so on the machine they used, it will NOT look at the specific value currently and compare it to what it should. A BMW diagnostic would have done that. (I hope I'm making sense). I asked about this and this was the response that I got.
