Given todays ever escalating fuel price I would say - diesel.

In fact the E90 320d has the type of performance, that one would normally expect from a BMW, though driving style differs alot on both these cars.

If you want a car that has instantaneous torque delivery, then the petrol car is the way to go, as sometimes in corners with the diesel the car runs off boost, which leaves you with no torque/flat spot when exiting the corners sometimes. Then you realise the fuel saving you are making, and all is forgotten. :roflol:

I've owned both, if that helps.

My dad has a 320D and I have a 325i.

Diesel pros : Fuel consumption, boost, cheap performance gains

Petrol pros : Awesome sound from those 6 's

Being at he reef, I think the 320d would be the better choice, but the 330d, would be the right choice

That all said, I love every second in my 325. I love the sound so much that I don't even listen to the radio

The 2008 up 320D were not short on power, 135kw. They pack a punch and certainly have good consumption. With current fuel prices as well diesel would def be the way to go.

Diesel FTW!

whatever when all the petrol bmws are turbo it everyone will soon swing back to petrol...

no way in hell would a drive a diesel it just cant have the character i want out of a car...

you can never have the fastest car on the road there is always something faster...

going with a short gear ratio on a petrol car easily make the torque you get out of diesel engine whats more you get more torque over more RPM and thats what really counts...

@ Prospect: I own a 325i at the moment, so you really hurt me cars feelings when you made that statement about a 325 being a donky... :nono:

I was up all night, having to drive her around, looking for 320d and 330d bmw's to race, just so she could prove to me she wasn't a donky, but a full blooded race horse. :excited:

She got her first opertunity against a E90 320d, and I tell you, she was off the line like a cheetah spotting a baby buck, she was so quick off the line that I almost got left behind... :mmm: ... and the win was hers.

then a few minutes later we had a go against a blue E90 330d. Once again she jumped off the line like a F1 car, and it was history for the 330d. Another victory!!! :joy:

She then got her chance against a 335i, and although I was scared, I thought I will sit back and let her have a go... and you wont believe it... SHE WON!!! :bravo:

Right after that, it was a new M5, and I knew, this is where she will go down, for sure, but guess what... once again SHE WON!!! :dropjaw:

Now I know you all are thinking that once again I must be spinning the truth, or that the other cars were not really racing, but I ask you all this...

... Is it my fault if Fountains BMW keep their cars locked up, and unable to participate fully in a race??? :dunno:

All I know is my 325i is no donky!!!

330d/320d. The 325i is a donkey.

@prospect - There must be something wrong with your 325i (if you own one).
I had the exact same line on my 323i (being a donkey), and since I fixed up the inlet manifold plumbing, the car is just a pleasure to drive.
Unless you are an x M3 driver :joy:

****************************

If you like sound get a sound system

I am biased toward diesels - especially the 330d is a rocket of note.

If you are from the M3/M5 stable, you would probably disagree and don't worry too much about fuel consumption anyway. Because you did not buy your BMW for good fuel consumption, right? Now that is the sound you should be after :joy:

Sorry for the little hijack, but it pays relevance to your decision

There are two questions about diesels that I can't put to bed:

1.) Is it worth paying more for it as opposed to a petrol (yah here we go again, but I am curious to see opinions on this) and when will TCO be better than that of the petrol models. From acquisition, to services, tyres everything. IOW Is the diesel really cheaper than the petrol model? Diesels generally have a larger price tag.

2.) Manual or auto - Word has it that the auto will save you from the morning and afternoon gym in your BMW  if it is an automatic transmission.
Then again they are prone to failure (especially the 330d) due to some serious torque going through the box.

Not trying to fuel a petrol vs diesel thread (again). :sorry:

I have a 325i and it gives me between 11.5 and 13km/l city driving. :argh:

BTW diesels do not like short distance driving.

In the current economic climate, I need something that is more economical, or sell something
