320D vs 2.0TDi

I have decided to let the A3 sedan go to loosen up some funds to do other things. So now I am looking for her replacement. Something not expensive and generally as good as even though older.

The two current contenders at the moment are E90 LCI 320D and A4 B8 or B8.5. The car must be manual, Don't really care about things like sunroof or xenons at the moment. I do some heavy mileage when I take a road trip here and there but always on tared roads and freeways.

There is a VW Jetta MKVI 2.0TDi in the background lurking around as well for consideration.

Budget is set to R150k.

What would you have?

I've got the B8.5 (petrol though) and it's really nice and comfy - smooth and effortless. The car drives you.

But, if you want an engaging car then its a big no. Cant even tell where the wheels are half the time lol (but that electric steering is really nice and butter smooth).

I had one for a few weeks, the B8 and then the oil consumption issues started and AUDI looked the other way so got rid of it. But you're right, the car is just effortless and that interior is just a masterpiece.

Haven't had any oil related issues with mine as yet (on 90k KM now and had it from about 30k KM). Hopefully it stays that way lol

I've heard stories about the diesel pump failing on higher mileage VAG's.

For this reason, I would stick to the E90 320D :thumbs:

I guess if you post the same question to the relative forums you'd get a biased answer to each brand.

They all have their pros and cons, but all 3 are brilliant cars. I'd suggest drive each one and see which one you feel most comfortable in.

I trust the people on this forum to have a more rounded view on things as compared to other forums.


I have driven them all and I am looking more at the day to day living with and things that break. I love Audi's and I have had a few and VWs. Big fan of BMW and I had told myself I want a Beema next but they are missing that thing... you know. Especially the interior but I love the brand and the term "Ultimate Driving Machine"

Honestly, the Jetta.

I had a B8.5 TFSI Manual and while it was a great car the little niggles started creeping up pretty regularly after 120000km.

I looked at and tested a couple of Jettas (TDI and DSG) and the value for money in terms of spec vs price was pretty good.

I haven't had trouble with mine yet, my brother in law at troubles with his A4 2.0tdi. But in his defense the stuff started after he loaded a file(Not RK file though)

But for me the beemer was just in a different league!

I haven't heard any problems with the diesels on the B8 / B8.5s
We had a B7 with just over 200k km with not a days problem.

Think the B8 / B8.5s interior are better looking than the E90.

If going the E90 route it must be an Msport though :thumbs:

Since you currently have an Audi I would go for the BMW, change is good .

Both are excellent choices you cant go wrong with either as long as they are neat an well looked after.

As much as I like the cars, it just felt too disconnected, the A4 B8 that is...a lot of buddies bought them however every single one of them ended up with 2.0T 155kw versions after having 1.8T.

I would say go ahead and get the 2.0T with S-line to keep you satisfied, otherwise 320d.

I love my C250 CDi but for a great, comfy all rounder...can bang it around but without AMG pack, she is a bit flimsy but then again that suspension is not for throwing corners.

When it comes to pushing mileage, for some reason I am scared of VW diesels. I love VW as much as BMW. When it comes to Diesels, I feel BMW takes it.

However, by you trying to cut costs, I assume VW will be much cheaper and newer to maintain compared to the E90.

The choice is ultimately yours.

Do you mean this one, I have been looking at this and I am a big fan on these having inherited a C350 in the same spec. i just have this fear that when things go wrong with Merc... Big numbers come up.

E90 - common oil leaks (depending on year model, speaking out of experience)
A4 - Gearbox issues as per the norm it seems

Yet I wouldn't be able to choose between the two so if it were me, I'd get both :smilebounce:

You should look at VW CC's aswell.
Dad has one from new and is standing on 155kkm now without any problems.
