320d Vaccum pipes

Hi,

Can some assist me on how the vaccum pipes on the E46-320d are fitted. Have changed the engine and put in the E90 engine with the E46 intake manifold but, the is one vaccuum pipes that I can not locate where it is to connect to.

on the e46 engines there is a vacuum distribution manifold under the intake, sure you saw it.. all vacuum pipes are supposed to go there.

only a few things needs vacuum on a diesel engine, depending on the year model. turbo actuator, and the various solinoids opening/closing for instance egr, swirl flaps ect.

if you switched to a newer engine, they dont use vacuum so much anymore, for instance the turbo actuator and swirl flap actuator is now electric (stepper motors) , so its quite possible that you will have spare vacuum lines.

just check that all devices needing vacuum have it, then blank the spare lines off.. else post a pic or two, might be able to guess more from that.

Hi,

I managed to find this from BMW agents. The extra vaccuum pipe runs rom where item number 12(in attachment) is connected but I can not see where it is to connect to. What should I do?

Also, I am using the exhaust manifold and Turbo from the old engine. How would this affect the Turbo actuator?

The newer turbos use solenoids and not steppers AFAIK. There is a little circuit somewhere on the web for converting the signal to the valve for the vacuum operated turbo to the signal for the newer turbo solenoid. It is basically just a mosfet to invert the signal IIRC. Firstly you should check if the turbo is actually vacuum operated or electronic and the proceed from there - does it have an electronic plug, or a vacuum pipe connected to the VNT mechanism?

ok, im confused now. did you use a e90 320d sub-assembly only, or did you transplant the whole lot.. engine,ecu ect?

number 12 in your diagram is connected to the turbo actuator from the vacuum manifold.. this is for a solinoid actuated VNT mechanism.

Hi, sorry for the delayed response - Christamas weekend.

I used the engine sub assembly from the E90 and reused the original (reconditioned) turbo from the E46. The turbo I have has a vacuum pipe connected to the VNT mechanism.
