If am not mistaken the oil for the diesel is 5W30 fully synthetic oil.

And yes its not that hard to service the car yourself.

Recommended is Castrol 5W40 FULL Synthetic. R360 to R400 per 5 liter. Your car takes 5,5l liters.
Some people don't believe in Castrol, but make sure about the full synthetic.

The air filter will be a surprise if you are used to just unclipping a cover and replacing the filter :) You have to take off a LOT of covers to get to the unit, but it has to be done. Good luck.

Castrol EDGE 5W40 is on special at makro R350 for 5L or R39 for 500ml. Either get that or Liqui Moly TopTec 4100 5w40.

We get full synth german spec Castrol in SA, so it should be all PAO (real full synth) based oil.

On my last service I used shell helix ultra and I have had no problems. (What matter is that it is 5W40 and it is fully synthetic)

Of course, forgot about that :)

The shell helix ultra has the BMW specs last I checked.

I wondering do you get any 5W40 (or 30) fully synthetic oils that are cannot be used for BMW's (not BMW LL01 or LL04 spec)

Most definitely. The more expensive liqui moly oils, for instance do not have that certification. But they would probably also work better. That spec was developed as the "long life" spec, which doubled oil change intervals, so I would rather change oil twice as often, without the extra cost of "certified" oil. But make sure the oil meets the API spec. Also, I would not put anything but synthetic in a turbo car. (at the very least for the higher flash point.)

That said, Castol Edge 5w40 has done my car well, sitting on a healthy 275000km now.

Thanks for the info, I must say I also prefer to change my oil more often, especially since I don't do that many km's, so half the normal service interval is around a year for me so it works out well.
