hello everyone. I have a problem with my 318i: e46 318i n42 engine engine turning but not sparking. I was driving normally a week ago when without warning the engine cut. There was no warning lights, temperature gauge was normal. A few minutes later, engine started and i drove a few km and it cut off by the traffic lights. I managed to get it started and drive home. It stopped twice. Mech came and ran diagnostics and the codes read were for cam and crank sensors. We checked pump, all ok. We changed the sensors...engine just turns, no spark. placing the sensors on another engine the engine starts fine, back on mine...turning no spark. Mech suggests DME is faulty. I'm not too convinced by his recommendation to get another DME. Anyone experienced a similar problem, please your advice would be greatly appreciated. Pros and cons of DME change?

Thanks in advance for any input i can get in this regard

Where you based buddy?

Without proper diagnosis it's impossible to lay blame at the DME, or anything else for that matter. That being said, if you're getting cam and crank errors and you've replaced sensors, I'd be more inclined to think you have a wiring issue rather than an ecu fault. I do two DME repair/replacements a week and I can assure you they don't just break.

i am in gaborone, botswana. when we replaced the sensors, the engine was turning but there was no spark. fuel pump was running fine. now we programmed another dme and we get a spark when connected to the diagnostic machine no crank with the key. now i dont know whether the auto knows what he is doing or something else is at play. what is the failure rate of a dme on average from your experience
