318 ti trans disengages while driving, Any reasons why?

Just bought my son a 318ti with 225k miles. first bmw. Was driving about 60mph and the trans disengaged when I let off the accel. Had to shift to N, then back to D to get my gears back. Any ideas why? I'm leaning towards electrical.
