LS units are interchangeable if im not mistaken:thumbs:

I stand to be corrected but they different, a carrier from a 4door car did not work on my car

Doesn't the 316i and 318i (4 potters) use the small case diff?

I know 100% that the 320i will be a direct swap in, realoem lists the same part number for the 316 and 318i as well from 96.

This is backed up (below)but how do i confirm. Will it be easy to identify whether or not a 318i diff is a type 188?

Hi, the other day I was searching on the epc for parts and found a little trick...
the BMW has fitted the 188 type diff (same as 6cyls and m3) to a special version of 316 and 318is.... it's the South Africa (ZA) edition.
Many parts are the same between 318is euro/us and ZA version. So the part needed are:

PART NUMBER | NAME | QUANTITY
26 11 1 227 777 | TRASMISSION SHAFT (1532mm lenght) | 1
33 21 1 227 585 | rear semi axle shafts (100mm/27mm diameter) | 2 [those are same code as 6 cyl halfshafts]
33 10 1 213 828 | diff 3.46 ZA edition | 1 .[or a 6 cyl diff]

There are other parts needed? Please I want to do a list of parts for every 4 168 cyl diff to 6 cyl 188 swap...

there is another car more diffused that have a trasmission shaft of 1532mm circa?
the bmw e28 528i use a 1532mm shaft, but I dont' know the flanges...
the bmw e39 540i use a 1521mm shaft, but it should be a shorter.

Diff swap done...freerider was right...what a difference. I think the 3.46 provides the best balance between topend driving and response
