20L/100km when accelerating?

Hi guys. I have an Auto 318Ti. Is this reading normal on launch? Or any means of accelerate for that matter?

Maintaining speeds seems normal at 8L/100km.

i would imagine that is normal- on hard acceleration your consumption can shoot up to 40+ L/ 100km

that is if you are looking at your actual consumption and not your average consumption.

Yep, under moderate to hard acceleration the needle sits at 20l/100km, which is normal.

Are you talking about the analogue needle below rev counter? If so, then yes - accelerating to get up to speed do use up quite a lot of fuel, though it does balance out when you get up to speed.

Normal - how quickly and easily it goes up to the 20 and above mark depends on the car. The 330i goes up and over 20 very easily compared to my Wife's 320i, but in reality both cars use about the came amount of fuel overall. Of course, once you settling at cruising speed it's fine again, and what goes up must come down - so slowing down or going down the hill that you have climbed results in possibly a 0 l/100 km consumption, so this balances out in the end.

With my car I always try and "keep" the econometer south of the 10 l/100 km when cruising or maintaining speed and it's amazing how you can learn how best to keep your car's economy down based on this and changing your driving style to best suit the car's characteristics.

I find myself trying to keep it below 10 aswell, almost becomes like a game. Sometimes I would take a longer route that has more straights and downhill roads just to bring my average down.

it will go well over what the guage reads... I could get my 1.6 polo to 76l/100 easily... have not looked to see if I can get the actual reading on the e46 but it would be more...

Even if I put my diesel on a live reading it briefly shoots to 99l/100 on hard acceleration.

When I pull off I get 39.5L/100km and I think that's the max it reads. My avg is sitting on 19L/100km now but hoping after a visit to mr smooth it comes down

Im sure its aimed more at freeway driving, as its the most constant on the highway at a maintained speed.

Well, it is for me very handy and allows me to optimise my fuel usage most of the time since I can see where I am using more fuel and where I am saving, and what works best for the car - in the case of my car, getting up to cruising speed as quickly as possible and then slacking off seems to work very well! I am of course not saying flat foot right through the revs acceleration, just a more firm prod of the throttle to get to speed quicker - a more gradual acceleration seems to increase my average consumption by comparison.
