By the looks off the spill it does look like ATF. Gearbox atf does tend to be absorbed quicker on tar surface. All problem I have with the situation is the noise and how long did you drive on a low oil level. First thing that suffers is the torque converter on low level. I suggest to pay a visit to ZF and give them what happend. I think the have software that can check internals like clutches and so on

It started jumping around in gears, with in a minute or two we saw the oil trail, and the car was shut off

It was a golden color, like fresh motor oil

The only part that concerns me the most, is the grinding noise it make after the engine was switched off, for about 5/6 seconds after the motor stopped , there was a grinding slowing down noise if that makes sense

Maybe there is a fanatic that knows a gearbox better but I would say the noise must have come from the gearbox or torque converter. And personally I would be concerned.

My suggestion is to give ZF a call tomorrow morning and speak to a technician and get his opinion and recomendation.

Keep us posted

Hi bud,

Sorry about your mishaps.

You need to give the dealership some stick into putting in a brand new motor and replacing whatever it was that made the grinding noise. If they do not respond favourably then take it up to BMW SA customer care.

It is ridiculous for a 1 year old vehicle with such low mileage to be having these issues.

Good luck!

You are in a real difficult position first your engine and now the gearbox oil that ran out. First contact ZF and get there opinion on the gearbox that ran with no oil and jumping gears, before you contact the dealer. I mean if ZF tells you over the phone its recomended to replace then you even have a stronger case to back yourself up.

Phoned ZF, they recon those gearboxes are solid, and the chances of any real damage occurring is very unlikely, but if i want i must bring it in for a diagnostic. Going to insist that the dealership in question should do this, and i want a copy of said report as well.

Waiting for BMW customer care to call me back now, to advise whats next

some googling and something cropped up that almost fits here, as with the oil there was a water like substance, apparently there are cooling lines that run form the front end where they would have worked

I've gone now , and most likely overkill , but with some google skills found email addresses for both Head office, and South Africa CEO, and sent a factual rant email.

Doubt anything will actually come of it, but lets see

I hope the car is atleast trouble free now. Good luck

Car supposedly will be ready at 2, there was apparently a “engineer” there from bmw South Africa who has given the car a clean bill of health.... I’m not convinced

Well, car fetched, and totally not happy with the dealings with this dealership,

I’ve basically had to cancel my dec holiday because of all this crap :(

Anyone interested , it’s bmw carnival ( East Rand)
