Hey guys i am new here

My name is Andre and i am ashamed to say....i am a BMW virgin....wow glad i got that off my chest now my question is

i currently own a 2015 Ford Focus ecoboost but i assume everyone has heard of the sh#t ford is going through at the moment.

i am in the process of buying a 2011 BMW 320D with 140K kms on the clock my Focus has 20K on the clock but it is loosing value by the day.

over the past week my car has dropped nearly 20K in value so i want to know from you guys as i am still a virgin i have never owned a BMW before.

Do you guys think this is a good move? because i am going from a 2015 to a 2011 car i cant afford a new F30 so i was advised to look at the e90 do you guys think i will be making a mistake? is the e90 reliable ? is it a better investment?

i also love the BMW events as my co-worker goes to them quite often and i tag along and i would love to take part in them some time in the future

Thanks in advance!!!!

If you can and your budget allows it maybe have a look at a 330D. The 320d is a nice car but you will miss the extra oomph you get from the 330d.

I havent heard of any major problems from the e90 diesels so should be fine.

If you do decide to go the BMW route we would welcome you with open arms into the BMW family.

the only problem i have with the 330D is that the tires dont last because of all the extra torque and i want a durable car that doesn't need new tires every 3 months

Hi AndreE,

I think you have a good vehicle at the moment. The Focus isn't affected like the Kuga. Ford will come out of this debacle eventually. Vehicle prices should stabilize and you shouldn't lose more than you should on your 2nd hand vehicle once they have ridden the storm around this issue.

Pros (Ford) - Ford's Sync, my wife's fiesta has this and I really enjoy using it. Works really well and will be tough to find a well specced 2011 BMW 320d with this type of connectivity. The year model means you have the remainder of your 60k km/4 year service plan and 120k km/4 year warranty. It is added peace of mind.

Pros (BMW) - Rear wheel drive, reasonably good fuel consumption. A much better drivers car and fun factor. Looks great with a sports pack (But tyres become expensive). Quite a bit more power and tune-ability.

i would stay with the ford - this shyte storm will pass and your price should be on the up again...

if you are going to trade, the dealer is going to rip you a new a-hole with trade price.

+ you have a great peace of mind with the motorplan on your ford...which you wont with with E90.

If you are planning to sell the Ford, because its losing value, do you plan to sell the BMW too when it loses too much value (due to age, km's etc?)

I fear that you might be looking at a new car for the wrong reasons. I wouldn't trade my existing car for one with 7 times the km's on the clock.

With that said, I have E90 with +- the km's you are looking at, and it hasn't given me a days problem.

these are all very good arguments and i appreciate it but let me just add the following the dealer is giving me close to what i paid for my ford and i have done almost 20K kms with it if i take the BMW i am financing it with a 2 year Finance warranty and after driving a BMW i want it even more and also i cant mod the Ford due to this fire issue and i was planning on modding the car even before i bought it. but now i cant and my inner boy racer wants it

In my humble opinion....

You moving backwards....

You have a good car there....if you were moving to an F30 YES (with motoplan etc...but not to an E90 with millions of KM'S (in comparison to your new car)

You looking to trade, for the wrong reasons in a financial sense, in my opinion. Your loosing value at the moment due to the sword hanging over Ford's head. This will pass. and in a year's tiem you would have absorbed most of the loss in value.

You going to take a massive loss, probably have to pay in cash from your savings, or load the balance on the E90, which is also loosing value, and will loose more once the F30 is replaced with a new model, which will be soon.

The e90 will also probably cost more in maintenance in the long run due to age, and mileage.

It does not make financial sense in my humble opinion, unless you WANT a e90, and is prepared to take the losses.

Don't mean to be a pessimist, but the dealer is not going to get that amount for your car. They all use autobid, so he is getting that value from somewhere. Most probably by upping the price of the E90.

No dealer will take a loss, just to make a deal. He knows Ford value's are down, no way he will give you full value, knowing he wont get it back.

The e90 is a great car. But trading a 2015 Focus at 20k km with service plan (I assume) for 2011 BMW at 140k km with no motorplan?

I would keep the Focus... :=):

OK so i understand what you all are saying.

another question is my ford has a 35% residual on the car and with ford losing value is this not going to bite me in the arse at a later stage? one of the reasons of selling was to get rid of the residual

Keep the Ford man, you will trade it today and it will sell tomorrow as a demo for market value, unaffected by the Kuga thing.

Don't fall for the "time to capitalize on Ford's misfortune" movement.

KEEP IT

Hope you don't take offence, but you were screwed the day you signed for that balloon payment. The fact that you basically only been paying towards interest, and not towards the capital (this is what balloon payments does), is going to make it worse for you, added the fact that your car's value has nose dived anyway.

If your car's value stabilizes, you only going to reach break even after say 48 months. Keep the Ford, increase your installments and keep the car till you broke even.

To try and sell it now, adding on top of the E90's price, with it also facing depreciation, is going to hurt you more financially in the long run.

ok i gathered what you all are saying and i will give this some thought before i sign anything but with that said, never mind the situation that i am in would it be a mistake buying a 2011 E90 320D? and just BTW you guys are awesome so much love for Ford on a BMW Forum :clapper:

Not any love for Ford from my side, just trying to give you, solid financial advice I would give anyone in my family.

BTW, I do believe your mind is made up, anyway.

So much fail, I don't know where to start...

35% residual on a Focus
Want to sell a 20k km car (at the time trade is low) to buy 6 year old,140k km car
WANT TO FINANCE A 6 YEAR OLD, 140k km CAR

See you in debt counselling mate.

Boet, keep your car!

If you trade up now you are throwing yourself in the deep end of financial trouble. Even if you have cash and are living above a comfortable life you dont really want to be throwing money away.

Dont forget that the cost of servicing is now on you!

Fun factor BMW wins, everything else in your situation, FORD wins

Everybody on here is giving you honest advice to keep the Ford. In your situation, I would keep it.

You would still be welcomed at the BMW meets, even if you don't own a real one, just go to your nearest toy store and get one. :tiptoe:
