Hi Members

I recently purchased a 2015 BMW 120d from the dealers(manufactured 2014 November). The dealers advised that the car has Bluetooth and USB.

After delivery I see the car doesn't have Bluetooth and apparently the USB port under the arm rest is for charging and cant read music.

Is there anyway that the USB can play music? I really don't want to go back to playing CDs.

Welcome.

Step 1 would be to determine exactly what audio system and options your car does have / doesn't have.
I suggest you run the last 7 digits of the VIN on a VIN decoder. That will show you which audio system is installed in the car, and we can go from there.
There are several VIN decoders available. A quick Google search should get you a couple of options.

OK, so your car has the base audio system 663.
To the best of my knowledge, it does not support BT or USB playback unless it also has options 6NK or 6NH. I assume your car does not have the phone snap-in adapter either.

I suggest you contact Gert at OBD Worx (forum sponsor) to find out what your options are.
I'm just not familiar enough with this radio to provide any further recommendations, sorry.

Format your flash , and do a test with a without folders. Fat32 will work fine. Your car definitely has USB playback. Also larger size flash drives bigger than 32gigs may take a while to pick up and read the folder structure.

Yeah if you have USB, it will definitely work...your format will need to be adjusted because I had the same issue at first.

When I did re-format the USB, it worked flawlessly afterwards.

Hi

I spoke Gert, he said the feature needs to be enabled by BMW.

I have tried a 4gig and 16gig drive. I clean format and didn't not work. I waited for a while and even left it in the USB while driving. I noticed that I don't have an external device option in the multimedia section.

I pluged in my phone and it charges.

If all else fails, you can at least write MP3 files to CD and play it that way.

Do you have an iPhone / iPod perhaps?

All new BMWs come with Bluetooth as standard. Send me the VIN then I will confirm for you. If your car has USB, Music should definitely be able to play. Check under Multimedia -> External Devices, and if your USB disk is displayed you should be able to browse through your music. If not, check on your PC that your flash disk is formatted in FAT 32, (not NTFS) and that the music files are in .mp3 file format. Hope this helps!

P.S: Which dealer did you buy your car from?
