Hi guys.

I'm looking at buying a 2011 or 2012 520d, but like to know what the running costs and reliability of these models are?

I used to own a 320i e90, and the parts very well priced and easy to come by... I didn't have to fix too many issues, but definitely not as reliable as my wifes honda jazz...

Any advise would be great thanks

Try and get an LCI 520d. There were many changes to the LCI. My dads car, apart from a radiator that was replaced a few weeks back the car has only had its scheduled services. Brilliant cars and he gets over 1000km on every tank.

Agree on getting an LCI. Those changes are absolutely worth the difference in asking price between LCI & Pre-LCI and many cannot be retrofitted at all let alone economically.

Reliability: 20d as a platform is well known as a safe bet. The F10 has few if any major issues as a platform that are unique to it. You might have an issue with an FRM unit (as many BMWs end up with) or the odd sensor or module that might need attention now and then, but that goes for buying ANY older car.

Just to note one thing: one of the 'usual' F10 problems is the aircon compressor and evap unit which are fairly expensive items but only fail after many years/kms of use.

I would definitely prefer the facelift, but it's a bit out of my price range though...

Will I be able to tow a caravan with it?

I have been looking at the X3s as well, but I think with them, you really have to go for a post lci...
