My 5c too.... I don't trust vehicle inspections at all. Especially when done for the 'smaller' dealerships, as I gather these are all 'corrupt' to some or other degree, and done based on paper more than a physical inspection.

Case in point - my old Z3 - I bought from a "dealership" in Pretoria. 'Roadworthy' and 'Inspection' done. All good, and I loved the car and there were no issues... until the day I sold it.:RedNo:

Turns out the engine number didn't match the paperwork. Should have never been roadworthy'd in that condition and sold in the first place.

Luckily after numerous phone calls, queues, police clearance visits, I managed to sort it out... but never again shall I buy a car from a smaller 'dealer'.

btw - I ended up getting the full likely history from the previous owner. What a story. :smashScreen:

Unfortunately the reality is that one even has to inspect a brand new car yourself before delivery.

So bit of an update:

Fixing the turbo waste gate actually costs more than buying two brand new turbos. Tunetech refuse to fix the bush if you give them just the turbos, They want the whole car so they can charge you through the roof. 16k before they even get started lol

My mechanic sent my turbos off to get the wastegate fixed and found that the center cores were worn, So replacing the center cores as well as fixing the wastegate rattle costs more than buying two brand new turbos if your trading your old ones in. I am not sure if I got taken for a ride or not here as I am not a turbo engineer but the one turbo did have a bit of play on it however they were not smoking. They were however very loud on spool up and spool down and I remember my 330d was sounding like that just before the turbo exploded into 4 pieces so I am not sure. The seller did say that the turbos were always loud with him too, I remember him mentioning in a old post that the turbos made a whining sound. We will see how the new ones sound to see if its because of the downpipes that they are so loud.

At the end of the day the car will have 2 brand new turbos from BMW which gives me piece of mind...I guess.

So I sent my old turbos in to BMW and ordered two new turbos which I will get on Monday morning.
Turns out if you give them your old turbos you get a massive discount. Apparently the wastegate rattle problem has been fixed in the later revisions of these turbos.

What my old turbos were reduced to.

I paid R13 700.00 for the turbos. (Bmw take your old turbos and give you refurbished ones. However the new ones still rattle. So it's going to bmw and they must replace them.).

Labour was I think around 5k in total to have them fitted. No I kept the same down pipes.

I had it done at Autoworx. Don't go there just let bmw do it for you as my car is not in good shape right now after these guys got hold of it. I'll need to spend some time sorting it out now as it's a big stuff up.

The car is miss firing badly and we about to go check it now. I suspect it's the o2 sensor we put in. I have a feeling the mechanic dropped the thing or something.

Hi Bud, sorry to hear about the stuff up on everything that happened. especially from a shop like that. that is not good at all. as you just got the car to a certain standard, and its a step back.

Regarding BMW, thats why im a bit apprehensive that BMW just sells on old turbos that have been reconditioned. i can understand why though, but majority of the issue is failing/failed/faulty Actuators, just tightening them should make a massive difference. ive not been a BMW owner for long, but ive ready many threads, might be a bit wrong, but it does seem like the main issue on these turbos, and predominantly the rear.

When I got the turbos I opened the box when I got to my mechanic to feel the actuator arm and there was slight play on it, I got heavily pissed of and started seeing red but my mechanic said they need a tiny amount of play so I shouldn't worry....I should have gone straight back to BMW and got another set of turbos instead of letting them fit these things.

I am hoping BMW doesn't try and argue with me about this whole situation and make my life difficult as I did say to the guy that if I hear a rattle come from these new turbos I am bringing them back and they were cool with that. And at there cost of labor to remove and replace.

All I want is a Z4 that doesn't have a damn rattle its not allot to ask for lol.

You should have got the turbo reconned and done the WG upgrade kit on it. Would have been much cheaper.

Hope the new set doesnt give headaches.

That's exactly what I sent the car in for :blueCry:

I gave no one permission to strip my damn turbos. I liked my turbos, they were good turbos, My turbos and I had a good thing going, They just had a bit of a speech impediment so used to chatter.....I sent them in and they got dissected!

If you gave no permission, then you can take that up with them.... that is incredibly unacceptable that work was done that was not discussed or approved, yet you bare the cost on that.

Unacceptable to say the least.

Exactly. This is why as soon as I have my car back I will be taking this up with my lawyer.

This has cost me a serious amount of unnecessary cash.

Sheesh matey, you having a real rough time of it. Hope you get it all sorted soon so that you can start enjoying the car instead of paying workshops to not sort it out.

Dude, now I feel kinda bad for haggling the price down on the 330i!?
Looks like you needed every cent for that "small niggles to sort out Z4"

But in all seriousness, not a cool situation to be in..

So I am just going to leave this here for the world to see:
img_3295_4033380197.jpg

So for those of you who are not familiar with turbos and Actuators, that is the turbo actuator arm that is used to pull the waste gate closed that is required to build boost. As you can see its solidly stuck in place! I have no words for this type of workmanship!!! :skit::skit::skit::skit::smashScreen::smashScreen::smashScreen::smashScreen:

So the symptoms I was having was that the car was driving fine but as soon as I pressed the accelerator in a little to rev the car past 2k rpm which is really not allot to ask for, The engine light would come on and the car would go into a serious limp mode! So the reason this is happening is due to the fact that the effing actuator arm can't pull the waste gate closed to build boost. The car then freaks out and goes mad.

You can also see there is a bolt in place of my 02 sensor! That's cause I gave the guy a brand new one to use that Chris supplied me with the car as a back up. after replacing vacuum lines that the mechanic seemed to have damaged I then told him to take the new o2 sensor out thinking that it was that causing problems and told him to put the old one back. I am pretty sure he dropped my new one or something cause its causing issues too. Could all just be the fact that the turbo actuator is stuck in place though. Anyways he didn't have enough time to drop the suspension to put the old one back and he has dented the new one, he assures me all the tech in the o2 sensor is right on the tip and not where its been damaged! :skit::RedNo: I want to kill this oak I wont lie!

The car will goto him on Thursday morning and he will need to correct this problem!

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously.

Take it to someone else and make him pay. If this is what he thinks is acceptable, then he really shouldn't be in business. How bloody embarrassing.

Thanks.

This is the workmanship I have gotten from my mechanic with regards to him fitting the new turbos!

I sent him a watsapp last night when I found this problem and he hasn't even bothered to reply!
You know if this was me I would be so flipping embarrassed that I would go open my workshop today and tell the client to bring me the car so that I could fix this stuff up and I would reimburse the money the client has spent on uber for over a week.

Guys DO NOT USE AUTOWORX! EVER! I have been using them for 10 years now and the last job and this job has been absolutely shocking. He replaced the radiator on my 330i a few weeks ago just before I sold it when I over tightened the drain plug and cracked it.

He put the new radiator in and didn't clamp the hose that connects to the radiator, the press clamp was just left open.
On top of that he didn't bolt the radiator in so it was loose, so every time I drove off from a robot or stop street etc the thing would rock back into the engine and this caused the alternator belt to wear a hole into the expansion tank. Luckily I was a few 100 meters from my house.
He was so apologetic about this and fetched the car with a flat bed the next morning and sorted everything out free of charge.

And now there is this!
What makes me laugh is that when I sent the car back he told me he has checked over all the workmanship and cant fault it in anyway. :roflol::smashScreen:

I would love to do that, but how do you get a dodgy mechanic to pay for something like this? Hold him at gun point? :thumbdo:
