2008 323i E90 Oil Consumption

Hi Guys

I bought my 2008 323i Sport in July 2010 with 35 000km on it.

I have now done about 17 000 km and have thrown in 4 litres of oil so far...

This is my first BMW and find it very strange. with all my other cars i did not ever have to top up on oil.

I took it to them on 17 November 2010 - they did the leak test and ring test according to them and everything is fine. They Drained the oil and filled it up. Ive done 3500 km since then and had to throw in 2 Litres.

When i called them they said something is def wrong, and they will have to remove the head to have it tested. If it needs work they will replace the motor at their cost.

Is there anyone that has had a prob like this before? and any advice as to deal with BMW about this. Still under motor plan for another 2 years.

Thanks

And here I am freaking out that my 15 year old BMW is using 500ml a month..

Lucky you are under motorplan

It could be that you have an unseen leak, perhaps into the bellhousing or somewhere else, but I would have it checked out.

Have it checked out, that does seem a bit high. It is good that they seem to acknowledge it as a problem, as they (BMW and other car dealers) are known to set crazy specs for oil consumption usually in the region of 1l/1000km and they might also try and throw this your way, but just complain enough in order to get them to fix the problem.

Thanks Guys.

U right with the Crazy specs for Oil Consumption, they did mention once that the norm is 1ltr/1000km. To me that is ridiculous! means i have to throw in 3ltrs a month! aint gonna happen!

Car is going in on Wednesday! Hopefully i get a new motor outta them! ( they mentioned if there is a fault on the head, that a replacement will take place.)

get it fixed.. thats wrong..

Where do you get the oil topped up? cause my sister used to have a 1993 E36 316i & she used to have to put in a 500ml bottle/tin every time she filled up...

Then my dad takes over the car from her & it never used oil between services

so we think the garage she used to use just always said she needed oil... So this could be whats happening to you

But the cars under motorplan, so fight until they fix it

the 323 E90 doesnt have a dip stick, the on board computer tells me how much oil needs to be added.

But fighting with them will be my middle name!:hammerhead: after paying so much for a car!

Your oil consumption is very high.

Why do these new cars these days all use so much oil??
My 1992 E36 uses no oil between services.. my old 1988 E30 318i with 380K Km also never used oil between services.. my 2000 E46 318i also uses no oil between services

The oil is quite thin for starters something like 5w30 if i'm not mistaken, no wonder the oil burns quick.

IIRC, my 330 uses 5w30 (castrol slx) and I have never needed to top up between services. Theres something wrong with this car. Take it to the dealers...

Actually thinking about it, i used my in laws E90 323i for about 6 months and never needed to top up oil. The run flats annoyed me though!

Sound like you have an oil leak on a valve/ seats( no visible oil leaks, but burns out via exhaust).
With normal oil seal test, won't pick up, has to open the engine to test.

Don't see any smoke when driving hard at all:thinking:. if the engine needs to be opened, and worked on, they will have to give me a new motor. according to the service consultant the motors aren't allowed to be worked on, and if there's something wrong they will have to replace. Going in tomorrow, so lets see!

Thanks for feedback guys!

I have an '05 model E90 330i manual which has now got about 51K km on the clock. When I bought the car it was on 46K km and the electronic dipstick showed the oil level as half. A few thousand kms on it went to a quarter remaining and then a few months ago it went to the min (add 1ltr level). So took the car to the agents and asked them for a litre of oil - bought it over the counter and then they "installed" it into my car. Drove off and checked the level - showed as a quarter remaining!! Turned back and asked them why it is not showing as full - told me to check the level following morning since it "takes" time to register the change. So off I go and just before getting home I check again and thankfully it showed as full! :)

So far the level is still showing as full, but I suspect it might be like the fuel gauge - takes long to get to the halfway mark and then drops rapidly after that!! From what I have read and heard, these E90 six's tend to use oil in varying amounts, probably a lot to do with the oil being quite thin. I would think that there is most likely a fair amount of blow-by at higher revs allowing some oil to exit through the exhaust as vapour. Not sure though...

What did the agents say about your car though?

Hey Guys

Got a call from BMW Forsdicks yesterday. My New Engine has been approved and will take 15 working days to come from Germany. they said i should have my car back in 3-4 weeks time.

They lady didn't exactly know what was wrong with the motor, but said they will give a full report and explain everything when i come and collect the car.

Im just glad they giving me a brand new motor:clap:, instead of fixing whatever was wrong with mine.

They Def delivered excellent service! I suggest everyone thats still under motor plan and experiencing high oil usage to take it in! who knows... maybe you will also be blessed with a new motor:excited:
