2007 E64 M6

Having wanted to drive a petrol M car for quite some time I have been watching the for sale section on the forum for a good part of 8 months. Needless to say me and my brother booked a one way ticket to EL this weekend and had a nice little roadtrip back to Gauteng. Must say the N6 from EL to Bloem is an absolutely beautiful road, good condition, little traffic and scenic views.

Having owned 5 previous diesel BMW's in different 3 series models some 20d and some 30d the one thing that I was looking for in a petrol BMW is the high rev grunt from the rear. And I must say S85 does a good job with that. Some initial impresions between this and my daily G20 330d is nothing beats the lowdown torque you get from the B57 and the ZF8HP in combination makes the gearchanges seem super quick.

However where the M6 does shine is once you get the rev counter above the 6000rpm mark, then it realy comes alive. The SMG box is certainly something to get used to when coming from the ZF8HP and I believe should only be driven in the manual mode. It gives you the ability to minize the amount of shifts as you drive faster or slower and only shift when you need to. For long parts of the road I was happy to just stick it in 5th and leave it there, the engin is strong enough to do the rest. 6th and 7th gear it seems is only there to lower fuel consumption as you will hardly ever drive fast enought to really utilize them. All in all its a great drive but I would not rate the SMG box as the ideal daily driver but luckily thats not the purpose of this car. Its something which will be used on occasional home to work and more over weekends.

The vehicle is extremely well taken care of and not much needed. Bearings and TA have already been sorted. Current mileage just below 100k mark.

Some things I consider to change/do:
Front bumper and one or 2 small panel resprays due to stone chips

Having sorted the major preventative maintenance I would still consider to check out below and need some advice regarding who, how and when:

Vanos, do you attend to this preventatively or leave till it bothers?
SMG gearbox and hydraulic cylinder oil change, when is this recommended if at all and do you do both or only gearbox oil?
The car has a little rough idle on startup for about 10-30 seconds and then calms down and idles smoothly, I have read some describe this as normal, or not?
Any other recomendations.

Vanos will not bother.
Remove vanos solenoids clean them in ultrasonic cleaner and swap their position (intake to exhaust and exhaust to intake)
SMG box find a shop that can do a a reset and bite points.

Thanks Peter. Will do the solenoid job, seems like the radiator will have to come out but seems wortwhile.

Would you ascribe the slight rough idle at startup to this or only normal vanos care.

Anyone with comments on SMG gearbox and hydraulic pump oil change?

Thanks Gents.

Yes thats my other money pit :) Although I see them both as cars that will only appreciate in value over time. Its got 488km on the clock but the 4.2d 1HZ has been overhauled so should be good for a few 100k km's more. Body work and interior is still immaculate and original and no rust so for me its a keeper.

I am planning to do a gearbox oil change this week on the M6, cant see it doing harm.

Will then on Peter's recomendation also do the Vanos solenoid cleaning and bite reset on the SMG.

I wouldn't worry too much about the rough idle, especially on cold start, that V10 needs a bit of time to get it's juices flowing. Congrats on the buy, you won't regret it, but I know the previous owner will at some point (like me, who's on the lookout for a V10 again, without my wife's knowledge, therefore putting both my life and marriage at risk). You'll love the sound of that screaming engine.

I don't intend to marry any car, too much on the bucket list, so she will be up for sale again at a stage.

For now I plan to do some minor maintenance as major stuff has been attended to. Some minor spraywork and then replacement of some of the rubber/plastic trimmings where wear is indicated. Other than that this car is beautifully preserved.

The rear right light has a small chip, I dont know if anyone knows if a 650i's light will fit or does the M have added tech. I know the lights have two settings for birghtness when braking. And is there a difference between the coupe and convertible.

Want to look out for a replacement.

Some OEM goodies arrived today.

Windscreen rubber. Always looks fresh with a new one.
Small crack in one front indicator light to be replaced.
Interior window switch panels ordered. On full back order from Germany. Probably the only part of the car to show some wear.

Will post some pics after fitment.IMG_20250320_190449.jpg

Still trying to het my head around the vanos high pressure oil pump.

Being a early 2007 model I assume manufactured in 2006 which should still have the 1st gen oil pump.

Was thinking how I can monitor this preventatively. Maybe regularly watch the onboard oil level for some sort of indication of change. Was thinking to replace the oil level sensor anyways since its a cheap replacement.

There is a modification that is done so as to ensure longevity.
That of course presupposes that your pump is ok.

Also that is a suspension cradle out which is not inexpensive.

Thanks Peter. All stuff to consiser for ultimate longevity. For now im just trying to determin for sure if it has the upgraded pump since some sources say any 2006 and up has the upgraded gears. Also some logical way to monitor the condition to some degree on an ongoing basis.

According to this page it seems like an early 07 model has most of the upgraded vanos components already.

I find this website extremely nice with preventative maintenence options for most BMW's.

Another confirmation that I have the revised vanos pump and oil line. Good to know.

I am currently making up a hose with a oil pressure guage measuring up to at least 2000 psi which I will use to test the vanos oil pressure. ISTA already has a nice testing module for this purpose which includes bleeding the solenoids. Something similar to below:
