Also just to clear up the turbo failure myth. It's the electronic actuator situated on the turbo that fails. So the VNT mechanism doesn't operate properly afterwards. The turbo lasts nearly as long as the x30d one. Which is a significant time (provided oil changes were done sufficiently)

Exactly what happend to mine on ±86 000km (out of motorplan, the 5years was over) turbo was good, electronic actuator failed.

That's the point? I believe BMW 320D N47 are built in RSA, Belgium, Germany. I am hoping RSA built which are shipped to Australia as well , these have the improved upper timing belt, better sprockets and adjusted guides

From what I recall when i went to the Rosslyn plant tour they say all the motors are crated in from europe. Cant remember the country. denmark or somewhere. Only the chassis 3 series 4 door chassis is made here.

This is my understanding too all engines are crated in. My N47 replacement was shipped in as well, directly from BMW in Germany. The chain issue is a hot topic on bimmerpost and mostly in the US market. We must get a stronger engine for SA cars? :flyfun:

7 years later and I have not heard of 1 failure in SA. And there are MANY 320d's on the road '07-'11. I believe they "sorted out" the issue pre-'09.

That said, apparently people are talking about timing chain failures on the F30's too. Still, when you hear of a failure, please let us know.

Turbo's are solid. My '05 had 145k km on the clock, turbo was perfect. When the Polo TDI's came out there were a lot of turbo issues. It seems this was a teething issue. Renault also had problems, but that was caused by poor servicing by Renault. Perhaps people who serviced the cars (at the dealers) just didn't quite know how to look after these things? :dunno:

The N47 engine has been out for so may years and we don't know of any local issues, at least on this forum that someone can confirm.
So why stress about the timing chain issue. All the occurrences are pointed overseas. Unless we have confirmed local issues i'm not going to worry about this problem and enjoy my car.

because they know we love our cars and drive them mostly, not using trams and taxis most of the time like in the UK

It is a problem in SA, and it costs a fortune to repair, and lunches the entire motor.

115 000km, BMW X1 23d Xdrive, timing chain snapped.

Was that the final verdict on you motor?

Dunno, gave the car to the bank to auction, I couldn't be bothered.

Sorry for the revival, however did you replace the cam chain or was it still the original one?

I personally prefer to change it around 105 000KM as part of preventative maintenance.
