2006 E87 116i Engine Overhaul - Advice Needed

Hi Guys

I have a 2006 E87 116i (pre-facelift), its on 305,000Km.

Last year it started smoking every time it idled for a while and started consuming more oil. Right now its smoking more and consuming way more oil and fuel consumption is getting worse.

There was a suggestion to just do Valve Stem Oil Seals, but the piston rings might be worn too, so it might require new rings and sleeves.

Question is, is it worth doing the overhaul at about R35k including parts and labour, bearing in mind I will have guarantee from the engineering shop, and the engine will last longer aft-wards. Or should I purchase a used engine and do an engine swap once?

1)valve stem seals
2)valve cover gasket
3)oil filter housing gasket and check vacuum pump for leaks
4)change breather pipe and oil separator.

Thanks, I will try this approach, it should be cost effective if no overhaul is required.

Sorry to hear about the mishap Bud.

Does this mean that the newer not built to last....

I'm sure there are older E46's running higher mileage without the similar issues.

I'm now doubting where to upgrade to one the newer turbo motors in future...

Probably the design standards have been lowered, I did engine overhaul on my 2006 116i at 360 000km last year now edging closer to 400 000km.

Doing valve stem seals first sounds like good advice. I had it done on a Golf GTi I had. It was smoking badly and the exhaust was pitch black. After the job was done the smoking went away. It was not very expensive, not on the Golf anyway.

If your BMW still smokes after that, you can consider other options. R35K is a lot of money. There should be a used engine around for less than that.

The normally aspirated 4 cylinder BMW engines are the worst. The 1.6 on the 116i is better, the 2.0 on 18i and 20i BMWs is worse, it starts smoking before reaching 200000Km

Hopefully the latest turbo engines are not as bad.

I am even thinking of getting the E82 125i because its a 6 pot 3.0 engine, it should last longer than this 1.6L did.
