Hi Guys

Newbie here so please be patient with this first timer. I hope you guys can help me with your opinions. I am looking at buying a 2005 X3 2.5 steptronic. The guy wants a reasonable amount of money and the kilos are very low (under 60,000). Its got plan until August.

I wanted to find out if there are any issues to look out for (gearbox, suspension etc), and offer some guidance on wether I should look at the car at all given the age. Also, how expensive are the parts on this type of car.

Really looking forward to your assistance.

Thanks
G

The transfer case should last well in excess of 130000km, at least that is when ours went poof.

You may want to get the VANOS seals replaced which will restore some peppiness to that 2.5 motor.

The flaking & peeling rubber on the window switches and steering wheel is easily repaired with a can of Plastidip.

Otherwise, they are mechanically very solid cars, comfortable and fast. I would buy another one in a heartbeat.

Guys thank you so much for the valuable info. I am still concerned about the age of the car. I called BMW motor plan and unfortunately I can't extend the motor plan. Maximum seems to be 7 years. Are there any other alternatives (somehow via motorite, etc.) ? I am a bit concerned about parts and maintenanceoutside of motor plan.

Thanks
Graham

Our X3 has been relatively cheap to maintain outside of MP, aside from the transfer case which we elected to have replaced rahter than repaired. Normal servicing costs (even at the dealers) from 100000km to the current 155000km have been very reasonable. I recently had to replace a fuel injector which was the only other unsceduled repair work.
