2004, E46 330i Manual Advice needed

Howzit guys,

Really need some advice, I am considering buying a 2004, E46 330i Manual. Car is still in awesome condition has 203 000kms on the clock and still in a very good overall condition.

I would like to know what I should look out for common issues, maintenance, and one big question is what is the consumption like. What can I expect more or less fuel wise.

Thanks For looking

Do some research, don't depend on others to specifically tell you everything.

Fuel Consumption
In Town: 10-12L/100km depending on driving style. Mine is about 10.5, and i drive relatively sedately with small amounts of highway in between.
Highway: 7-8.5L/100km depending on speed and consistency.
When Hammered: A lot.

Make sure it has a Full Service History. A FSH basically just means oil changes, beyond that you don't really know, unless the previous owner can provide invoices of work done. Ideally oil changes should be done every 10 to 15 000, which is more often than the factory specified 25 000km.

See here for common oil and fluid leaks:
http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=882732

The cooling system is generally a weak point due to many components being made of plastic that gets brittle over time. Many beleive that you should replace teh cooling system every 100 000km or so to prevent any potential failure - if teh car overheats, you can very quickly/easily warp the aluminium head. I would say expansion tank and cap replacement are necessary preventive measures. Other important components would be upper and lower radiator hoses, thermostat, water pump, coolant temp sensor, and the radiator sometimes fails at the plastic joins.

Here is some reading: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/foru...-E46-Cooling-Guide-(Information-w-parts-list) (this covers belts and pulleys which need to be checked as well).

At that mileage, you'll want to do a full suspension inspection, because there could be worn bushings (e.g. lower front control arm bushings, rear trailing arm bushings) and the shocks might need replacement.

Check the brakes - discs and pads bought from a parts store like Midas or Goldwagen are reasonable and on part with other vehicles. This is just normal wear and tear though.

I would strongly consider doing teh VANOS seals - this will no doubt restore some low end torque, and make the engine run smoother. PM Moranor on this forum for more info.

As mentioned, the window mechanisms do tend to fail, its a common E46 problem, again due to the use of plastic which brakes over time. Repair as necessary - but you can check for ones that are failing - if the window winds down faster than it winds up, then its a sign of imminent failure.

If you buy it, I would basically do teh following immediately so taht you know it has been done
-oil and oil filter change (it one hasnt been done in teh last 10 000km)
-powersteering fluid change
-brake fluid flush
-coolant flush (NB!)
-gearbox oil change (if its a manual).
-air filter change

The above aren't all taht expensive and you can pretty much DIY all of it (except the OEM gearbox oil is quite pricey, but this one is optional i guess).

That's a good start for you. Remember - An e46 is only as reliable as the maintenance of its past, and I'm not talking about oil services, I'm talking about addressing all issues that arise over time.

Good luck.

@ AdiS - Thanks for the response. I did research the info but the stats versus actually hearing from guys who know the cars first hand is 2 different things all together. I have always owned older BMW's E30 and E28,s so not too familiar with the newer models.

Nonetheless based on the information you provided it is quite more than I expected and for that I am gratefull and it will allo me to make an informed decsision.

Thanks once again :praise:

You're going to love the car!!

I was lucky with mine, but what Adis said is fantastic advice! Other than that maybe check LCABS for wear if they haven't been changed already, you can also get a quote from Moranor here on the forum for the poly bushes.

From my experience, I think the main issues are the cooling system. It's advisable to change the expansion tank and thermostat and waterpump. Lower control arm bushes are worth checking out as previously mentioned.
Also advisable is to change the 3 pulleys and 2 belts. This is over and above changing the fuel filter and plugs.
My plugs were changed at 130771 km only for the 2nd time in 10 years:praise:
My fuel filter was changed for the first time in 10 years:fencelook:.
If its got FSH, you will be able to see what was changed although I suggest changing the times I mentioned so you can start from scratch and know exactly what is done.
As for prices, I purchased the following items in June:
Castrol 10L @ R500 approx.
From Goldwagen:
oil filter @ R35
Air filter @ R92
6 plugs @ R75ea
Pollen filter @ R174
Thermostat @ R680
Fuel filter @ R708
Coolant @ R72/L
3 Pulleys @ R400
2 belts @R 200
Water pump @ R495
Expansion tank @ R750

Some of the stuff is just preventative maintenance, but guarantees you many trouble free miles.
It is the best BMW that I've owned. It will give you effortless pleasure.
What makes yours even more special is that it has the 6 speed manual box.
I would not do the Vanos seals unless absolutely necessary.

Mods wise, look at a Decat, and possibly the 3.38 diff ratio, I have that:blab:
Makes the 330i a different car altogether.

Consumption wise it depends on your driving style. Town driving for me yields 10.5L/100km. Open road as low as 7.4L/100km:thumbs:

All in all the Poor mans M3 :inlove:

Goodluck. Billybob bought a 330i not so long ago with 253000km and he's loving it.
So mileage is not so much an issue provided it was well taken care of. .
