2004 E46 318i sponge around air filter

Does anyone know the purpose of the sponge around the air filter. Mine has gone brittle and needs to be replaced. Is it safe to remove this sponge?

Yes its to make sure theres an adequate seal so no dirt gets past the filter into the engine. If its brittle and has holes then your car is sucking up dirt into the engine. Maybe even a few flys and rabbits

Rabbits can be problematic. They can cause the car to develop a sort of hopping sensation.

If the sponge around the air filter itself has gone brittle, its probably WAY overdue for replacement or is of inferior quality.

I dont ever recall having one that has had a similar issue.

just change the filter a nice clean filter is a good thing anyway

I have changed the filter. Replaced with GUD filter but it does not come with the sponge. Does the OEM one come with the sponge?
