2004 318ti e46 - Shudder & Rattle !!

Hi Guys,

New to this site & unfortunately my 1st post is one seeking help or advice! I wish this wasnt the case because I love my BMW :( And sorry for the long post!

Anyway to the problem, I have a 2004 BMW 318ti (e46). I bought the car last year in July it has aprox 96000 K's on the clock. It has a full service history with BMW & the milage genuine.

A few months ago I noticed a slight shudder when taking off in low revs, rev higher on take & no shudder. The problem is inconsistant and seems to be worse when its cold or when taking off on an incline. Along with this is a weird rattling sound, almost like I have a diesel car. Eventually a month ago my car squelled wheb starting
up thats when I decided to take to take it in.

I thought it may have been the engine mountings or the clutch but the mech said they where fine & replaced the idler and tensioner pulleys. this elimanted the squek but not the shudder after this I also noticed how much the engine was vibrating and note the car was only due for oil service in 13000ks.

I drove it for a week and the shudder did not go away. I took it in again this time to a new mech. we did a full oil service, replaced plugs, oil filter, fuel filter and did engine flush plus back brake pads.

the car felt brand new for a day and then the shudder came back and it is now doing it no matter hot or cold. however the service did fix the engine vibration but still got the rattle.

There isnt much info online but from what I have been able to find it seems it could be the oxygen sensor, Clutch delay valve or fly wheel? But then my mech would have seen if it was the flywheel as we had him check everything when doing the service?

I am 5k later and shudder is not gone!!! I hope someone may be able to help before I spend anymore on the dam thing.

Does anyone have any advice?

thanks

Alisha

Welcome.

Last time I had a shudder in low revs I replaced the coil pack and it did the trick.

Hope your issue is sorted ASAP.

Good luck

Hey, my 320D is doing the exact thing as well, not sure if i must drop some money on a new clutch kit??! Have you perhaps solved your problem, and how?

He wouldn't have seen the flywheel unless he properly tested it, could be the flywheel, take out the CDV valve, very easy to do..

I wonder if this could be the vanos? I have seen these as symptoms related to it, think moranor could shed some more light on that.

Sounds definitely like a failing dual mass flywheel to me. Replacing the clutch is all well and fine but the dual mass flywheel can also fail and wear out...

Had the same issues on my car, although my shuddering got worse with heat.

How I knew it was my flywheel:
Try keeping the revs very low ~1000rpm while riding the clutch (like you're creeping in traffic) - it should be juddering. Now try and ride as slow as you can in 1st gear ~1000 rpm with the clutch fully released - there should be no juddering at the same engine speed.

could be the dual mass flywheel, a 02 sensor,VVT motor, MAF or coil/s and and and..., but also keep in mind the N42/N46 does become quite rattly shakey over time, and begin to sound like a diesel when idling, also they leak oil like from time to time just to mess with your mind:fencelook:

N42/N46 its a love hate thing.

I did the whole testing thing, in traffic and it looked like i could not drive as the car would `jerk` haha but it gets worse we on a hill and over the months its gotten worse. I just had a minor service done, but still feel it.... is it worth droping abot 3g on a new kit?

So did it jerk when you were riding the clutch, and NOT jerk when you were not riding the clutch?

When riding the clutch, not matter how much i give diesel/gas it does it, untill the clutch is fully released

If it persists when using the clutch it could only be a fly wheel issue. They are a common problem across the range, especially if you buy a used car or have a car with different drivers, diverse driving patterns attribute to clutch component damage & failure
