2003 E46 320i Clutch Pedal Issue

Hi all my fellow fanatics!

I have a BMW 2003 320i e46 with about 230000kms on the clock.

I recently started experiencing my clutch pedal's 'sweet spot' or 'balancing spot' or whatever you call it, felt lower down than usual when changing gears.

When I now drive, I have to adjust the way I would usually make smoother shifts. Most of the time I tend to mess up and it feels like you are getting thrown back into your seat when shifting.

I don't know if it is a master cylinder, clutch pedal bushing or return spring problem, in the hope that its something small and nothing major like replacing the double flywheel and clutch itself.

Can anyone provide me with some ideas what it could possibly be or have you experienced the same issue and what can I do to fix it?

Hi All!

Problem solved! The issue was low brake fluid in the reservoir. Just toped it up and its all good.

Found this useful video on youtube. Talks about a bad clutch fluid line, but the part about the clutch pedal was what I was experiencing:

I also had my DSC light and hand brake light used to come on while I was driving. I had previously assumed it was a faulty ABS sensor and had to be replaced. Now after topping up the brake fluid in the reservoir all the lights are off while driving. Saved myself nearly 3k for a new ABS sensor.

Hope this info helps anyone else with similar issues.

Glad you sorted bud.

You shouldn't typically be losing brake fluid so maybe have a look for any signs of leaks

Thats true man! I'll put it up on the stands and have a look underneath tomorrow.

I think it was just my own negligence after replacing the rear brake pads a month ago and not having a look at the brake fluid level in the reservoir.

I'm no mechanic, but I'm sure learning a lot!:hammerhead:

if you lost enough fluid to trigger all those symptoms then I suggest you look at replaying the slave cylinder its around R650 at goldwagen and at that mileage it will drastically improve the pedal feel on the car
