hi got an opportunity to purchase this in auto with 130k on the clock. i've been reading up and apparently turbo failure is BIG :bawling: with this car. i asked the guy about it and he said

'No, that is the face lift model with the new 110kw motor and WITH OUT the turbo trouble'

i just wanted to know if he is talking nonsense. is the turbo failure prevalent on the pre f/l or on the f/l model?

your asisstance would be appreciated.

The turbo problem has been 'greatly reduced' in the f/l models, but not completely sorted. Not even on the E90's...
So there is some truth in the statement, but turbo lifetime does not depend on the model, it depends on the driver and operation.

thanx for the response. the mileage largely is long distance according to him. would that aid the turbo's lifespan? i'm thinking of a warranty for the turbo and engine.

130k over 9 years is not a lot and I doubt the 'long distance' theory of the seller. An aftermarket warranty for that car would be good, but not worthwhile. Unless you get the car for like 40k under book, then you are safe. Then again, it is not advised to recon a blown turbo, but it can be done for as little as R3k.

40k would be half of what i would pay for it. that would not make it cost effective. i will investigate. its in really good condition though. the leather seats dont even have 'bum' impressions yet..

OK< R40k was maybe a bit over optimistic, still, if the seller are hard up for the sale, he most likely know that BMW or anybody else will only trade him a half eaten toenail and some fries for a 2001 BMW.

R80k for that car is on par with the market, but if it is in the excellent condition that you mentioned, it might be worth it. Then again, you might pick up 2003 320d models in that price range too. Haggle for R60k, otherwise look for a facelift model.

Other point might be (if you are really ready to buy) to check the VIN and motorplan history from BMW.

Hope you come right!

it is the f/l model. he edited the ad after i asked. and i had another look at the pics - it has the indicators arches upwards. if i meet up with him i will request the vin to have it checked by BMW.

If the engine is the same that's in the pre f/l 120d (M47N2TU), you should be fine... Just passed 100 00Kms, no problems with the turbo... yet. :mmm:

Diesels are NOT performance cars. Economy. I hardly drive mine over 3000rpm. This is sufficient for 140km/h and gives enough oil to turbo.

Swirl flap removal is also a MUST.
