2000 e46 318i auto transmission question

Hi,

I have been having some trouble with the gearbox in this car - it's a 2000 318i auto with the m43 engine. The transmission range display on the cluster does not indicate the correct gear and occasionally the display is completely blank. The transmission has also started to shift a little less smoothly than before. The other problem that I have is that my hand held scanner will not comunicate with the OBD on this car (it works perfectly on all the other BMW that I have tried) so I cannot get any fault codes

Can anybody tell me what gearbox this is ( ZF, GM etc) and has anybody had a similar problem - it looks like the selector switch may be inside the gearbox ( I have already tried to remove the multiple pin plug at the rear of the gearbox and clean it before refitting)

Any advice will be appreciated

Thanks

Hi Andrew, sorry mate, I am clueless to these issues, as I have never owned a car with an auto box. :dunno:

I am however sure someone on the forum will be able to assist you, so just be patient. :thumb:

I discovered when the head gasket blew, the increased pressure also caused the transmission oil cooler to rupture resulting in the movement of trans oil into the cooling system and coolent into the gearbox,

I sincerely hope for the owners sake that no lasting damage has been done since the trans oil came out like milkshake - nasty
