2000 320d injector pump

Hi there folks, maybe someone out there can suggest a solution.
I have finally finished re-conditioning and re-building a 2000 model 320d (not common rail type ) .The car would not start and was taken to the local diesel pump agents here in Port Elizabeth. I'm told the pump ECU is faulty and an internal piston is chipped and must be replaced. The preliminary quote is for almost 14K. That's way out of my reach at present. Can anyone recommend / suggest a more affordable option. Thanks. Mikem.

Yea

Get a new mechanic.

How does he know a piston is chipped.

The ECU being faulty is prob bull as well.

A replacement ECU is 14k from BMW alone...

So your getting screwed here somewhere

remember this is the pre common rail engine guys, uses a vp44 high pressure distributer pump, which has a small pump control computer on top of the pump itself, in addition to the ecu.

because this controller is mounted on the pump itself, it gets quite hot and eventually fails, usually dryjoints somewhere. as for the pump itself, it is hellout expensive to rebuild, nevermind replace, most diesel places that know what they are doing are going to charge you around 15k to rebuild it.

in addition, if the pump gets removed from the engine, the engine is supposed to be locked in place, so that when the pump is refitted, the fuel timing is correct..

sorry mate, this is why i eventually got rid of mine, the advance on the pump failed, and the engine was scrap (burnt holes in all four pistons) due to overfueling.. engine was just to expensive to rebuild, was not worth it..

maybe try to find a vp44 secondhand somewhere ?

ps . something else just occured to me now too, might not be relevant, but on this engine, if there is air in any fuel line, it will NOT start.. needs to be bled..
