Yes, I did it :sorry:
For anyone looking for the perfect gearing option, this is not the place
I finally removed my 3.46 ls diff and fitted a 2.93 open diff(Thanks Capetonian) to my e36 325i.
Just my view on things so far: the seemingly bad
- As expected, car is definitely not as lively off the line anymore
- Responsiveness went down
- I have to gear down to pass sometimes
- I sometimes have to gear down when going up hill
- no more "spectacular" u turns
The Good: The reasoning behind the madness
- Consumption for the first time is now around 8.5l/100kms. With better driving will be even lower
- I can do 140kph without looking for another gear :hammerhead:
- At 110 kph the car is merely idling at just under 3000rpm's in 5th gear
- When driving the gears out, top end fear(and shakes because vert) actually forces me to back off before reaching the middle of 5th.
- Less Shifting...second gear goes on forever, so does third and forth and fifth
- Consumption is great
- Consumption is great
I dont really like it but it suits my pocket for now. Will go back to my short 3.46 LS as soon as I find a new daily. Not sure that I'll still enjoy the 5 speed with the 3.46 after the way the car behaves on the freeway now so I may need to start looking at 6 speed options soon.
Thats it really, if you can live with less revs, its not that bad
