yehp, goto goldwagen, or a clutch and brake place and order a clutch for a E46 330d ... between R3000 and R3500 .. depending on where you buy ..

works 100% for 540i and M5 .. :) same clutchkit .. hehe

Depends if the car shudders at all. Easiest way to tell is to try and move the "top" half of the flywheel. If there is a lot of movement, replacement is needed.

there is no shudder at all. is that a good sign . im going to have to dyno the car when done the guy i bought it from came down with 10k because the clutch slipped fsh sound and chipped . according to him (taken with 500 g of salt) it kicks out about 300kw on the dyno . All I know with a slipping clutch it outpulls my S4 .Well we will see

Clutchy squaks the truth...

One trick though, stop driving it straight away before you need to change the flywheel too.....

Each time it slips, you damage the surface of the flywheel some more, and there is only so much you can take off with imrie paper, eventually the flywheel will become a doorstop...

So the entire kit is the same? Would this work on the e34 540i 6 speed as well?
(This is for the 330d 6 speed manual? Not sure if you got it in a 5 speed)

Ok so it is pretty obvious that if the clutch is slipping it is on its way out, but if it is shuddering then the flywheel needs to be changed as well?

Cause on my 330i the clutch has been shuddering long before it started slipping, and it is the same on the 540i, I am guessing this is because the flywheel is gone before he clutch? Is this normal?

Won't work for a normal E34 6 speed as it has a dual mass flywheel. You need a 265mm where the clutch mentioned above is 240mm (Correct me if I'm wrong here). I looked high and low for a clutch kit that won't set back just shy of R10k locally. Eventually I brought a kit in from the stated for like half the price incl shipping.

If you have a normal 540i (Auto) that's been converted, then I'm not sure what clutch you can or can't use. I think Uber finished his 6 speed conversion. Send him a PM.

Yeah I just can't remember what uber did that is why I am now wondering (will probably see him over the weekend so will just chat to him again). I am just weighing up what to do, be cause I have the 5 speed box on at the moment, but the clutch needs replacing and the dealers seem to be the only place that has it. So now I am just weighing up whether it would be worth it to do the clutch or if it would just be better to start buying stuff for the 6 speed conversion and just drive till the current clutch gives in entirely and then do the swap to 6 speed.

Yeah I just had a look and from what I can see the (from LUK's online catalogue)
The 540i6's repset clutch kit is listed as a 270mm with part number 627 1637 00
and the 330d the kit is listed as a 240mm with part number 624 3353 00.

I bought the real thing from ECS Tuning in the states. The box had BMW branding on it and everything. Was about R5500 to buy and ship here.

I'd also be interested to know what Uber did. Make him do a write up on the forum :)

I will try and do that :)

From what I priced the clutch kit for the 5 speed is R5k from the dealers, but I would rather spend that money on going the the 6 speed.
But this is on hold for now in anyway (or at least long term plans) as I need to do the clutch on the 330i first and sourcing that has left me quite poor  had trouble finding the stuff and this for a fairly common model, so does not bode well the something that came on a manual V8

Uber Soldat used a E39 540i's flywheel for his E34 6speed conversion and a 330d clutchkit ..

the normal E34 540i uses a 265mm clutch as stated above ..

@Sanky: try to find a used E39 540i flywheel overseas ...
I had my flywheel for my E39 6speed conversion custom made by AACC in pretoria .. they used the trigger wheel from my auto flywheel .. but yours in the E34 won't use a trigger wheel so you can just have a solid flywheel made up for about 4.5K

:) food for thought ..

Thanks, yeah the solid flywheel was one of the directions I was thinking of going with the e34.
