The car sometimes battles to start, you can hear as it's turning over that it isn't making compression. Compression test results don't lie, either way the motor would need to be stripped down to determine the exact cause of the multiple low cylinders. Collapsed rings would be my guess, maybe blown head gasket between cyl 1 and cyl 2.
Maybe toast is the wrong word but it will need rebuilding regardless.

What did the car come to you for originally?

Is the transplant a solution to a problem the car had or is it something the owner wanted to do from the start?
The car came in for full suspension refresh as it's beyond driveable over 130km/h (shaking) and new clutch/flywheel as it's on it's way out and shifting gears is becoming a problem. Unfortunately, the gearbox has a massive oil leak and has been running with almost no oil in it so it is most definitely toast now so I suggested the 6spd idea seeing as we replacing clutch/flywheel anyway.

The 2.8 transplant is something Tumi liked from the get go, the compression numbers of the 2.5 was all the incentive we needed to convert to 2.8i

I sincerely hope the OP didn't pay a premium for the car with all these mechanical issues present.

I have been driving the car daily from Centurion to Johannesburg and back everyday. The car started on turn every time. The car never used a drop of oil or water between a service. There was no smoke what so ever from the engine on cold start or when it was warm.

If the current owner wanted a motor change for his personal enjoyment of having more power then so be it.
This thread should not be made out to be that i sold a forum member a lemon of a car.

So now I'm jealous....

I drive my coz 328i quite often, the torque is definitely something to consider over the 323i.

Perhaps he should consider doing the manifold swop during the swop? Like this he wont feel the torque loss at the bottom and will enjoy a rev happy 328?

The current owner test drove the car and he did say the trailing arm bushes needed to be replaced. I also mentioned to him that the control arm bushes needed to be replaced after the roadworthy on the car was done. Its an old car and yes these things need to be replaced from time to time. it was also mentioned that the clutch needed to be replaced as i told him i doubt it was ever changed since new.

As for the gearbox issue you speaking off. I drove this car everyday with no issues changing gears. i sit in traffic everyday and if there was an issue i would know about it after over a year of driving it. The car parks in the same garage spot everyday and i showed him there was no oil spots on the floor.

In closing, the issues that i knew about was made known. If i knew there was a toast engine or toast gearbox i would have kept the car and worked on it myself. I have been on the forum for a very long time and i would not do the next forum member down either.

The current owner can contact me should he feel that i was not honest in the sale in anyway.

PS im in IT and not a mechanic so i can purely go on how the car treated me.

From the inspection and results, it looks like the car was inevitebly going to give problems. That’s the thing with cars, you never really know what’s happening with the internals.

Good luck to the new owner with getting it sorted the right way.

So I managed to grab myself Rozey the gal of my dreams from Karsh330d (Thank you Karsh) :=): She's a fine example of a clean car you'll rarely find an e36 sooo clean. :smilebounce:

So I immediately to her Gizmo for some Gizmo touch :tiptoe:

A lot of good things are about to happen to her including M52B25 --> M52B28 conversion.

Congrats Bro an awesome car, good luck with your conversion and you can be assured that the car's value will jump to at least R150k once all the bells, whistles and maintenance is carried out :thumbs::thumbs:

Are you being serious?

I don't think it works the way you think it works.

He is trying to mock Gizmo regarding the previous sale of a 330i touring.

Not in the least bit. If anyone know the E36, it's Gizmo.

Yuben, please place your bitterness over losing a car you wanted to buy elsewhere, your sarcasm is not appreciated by anyone here...Build a bridge and get over it.

Karsh, the deal between you and Tumi is your own business and not once have I brought it up. Im just posting my finding of what Im working with here, I will be sure to post lots more pictures as he has asked me to document the build. Tumi has been under the car with me as we have discussed all that needs replacement. He is fully aware of what he purchased.

Externally the 2.5 is in great shape. Some sweating on the timing chain cover is the only visible sign of an oil leak. Besides that, the motor looks in great shape, pity about the internals.

The gearbox however...

Clutch with 250 000km

I would not consider this car a lemon, it's far too original and untouched and in this day its a rare thing to work on a virgin E36 such as this. She is the perfect base for an awesome daily driver E36 build which is what Tumi is after.

Now onto the second part of the 2.8 swap, the donor:
