I always wondered what BMW were thinking when they placed the P/S reservoir down in the bowels of the engine bay where it cannot be accessed without stripping the intake/airbox off.

They were thinking that it was the cheapest location.

I see you orientated the hose clamps to the OEM position of "Skin your knuckles while replacing serpentine belt position".

Yes sir
However that way it does not interfere with the vanos wiring

Peter - awesome work as usual. its amazing just seeing you put this effort into the cars and bringing them back to life. your workmanship and business ethic is awesome. keep it up brother.

can I ask you a question though, what would make the above mentioned car ping at times. it doesn't always do it.

also, did you perhaps do the gears on the vanos and does it ever become damaged or something like that.

High compression motors like these are more fuel octane dependant, poor quality fuel causes pinging. S50B30 has knock sensors to prevent damage.
Is the knock in low rpm or high rpm?

I also get knock every now and then under 1500rpm on my 11.6:1 compression M42 2.0lt motor. Fuel octane boosters work wonders on high compression motors.

on our subaru we kept getting a massive power cut at 2000 RPM eventually worked out it is a high compression motor made for the jap market they get 100+ octane at the pump

completely different motor with NF so smooth and so much extra torque will probably fit water injection at some stage because long run it will be cheaper

now mine is usually between 2000 and 3000 but it doesn't happen all the time. and it only lasts for about 500 or 700 rpms..

so what octane booster could I use.

thanks Gizmo for the help..

one more question, the "vanos rattle" that we hear from time to time.. whats up with that. whats the cause of it.
