Good day. I have gotten my self a 316i, but there is a problem, yesterday A guy with a stock standard fiat strada 1.2 made it look as if I was looking for parking, I know the 316 is'nt the fastest car on the road, but is it supposed to be that slow and if not, what can I do to increase performance and what could cause it to be this slow, any help would be greatly apreciated. Thank you

Howzit,

I had a 1995 316i and believe me, any 1.3 golf could leave me for dead.

I just made peace with the fact and kept it standard. The acceleration between 100 - 140km/h was reasonable though.

Had almost 300k km on the car and ran faultlessly. Enjoy!

Leave home earlier ...

Anyway, don't bother spending money on the car cos it's just gonna be money thrown down the drain. Make sure it's serviced/maintained properly and save up for your next BMW (if you want more performance).

Couldn't agree more

You do need to understand that the BMW is made from proper metal. The FIAT is made from recycled Coke cans, ie very light.

I wont spend too much on trying to mod her.

Sorry

thanx for the info, maybe it's just because i have gotten used to the power of a v8, one more thing, what would cause spark plug number 2 to burn black and the others brown ?

Just maintain your baby with plenty of TLC and let the "coke cans" be.

How much trouble would it be to fit a 318 or a 320 engine ? and oproximitly how much would it cost ?

It would cost more than selling your car and buying a 328.

Hi, today I have discovered new problems with my 316, it started smoking and when it's cold it doesnt idle smooth, when it's at working temp it idles @1200rpm, I have noticed that she is using oil, any ideas to the idling and what would be the best, let someone overhaul the engine for R7000 or buying another engine from bemow ? , your input would be highly apreciated

The idle might be caused by a dirty idle control valve or possibly a vacuum leak of some kind.

Also the smoking, does is smoke continuously when the engine is at operating temperature of only at start up, if it is only at start up it could be the valve stem seals otherwise the rings. If you can source a good condition engine for a reasonable price it would be a good idea (same engine you have know), but is would also depend on the actual nature of the problem as it might be cheaper to just fix the problem, also with second hand engines you don't really know what you are getting in terms of mileage, wear, etc.

Thank you very much, I replaced the afm yesterday and the idle problems are gone, it now idles at 600rpm, and the smoking is only at startup
