e36 316i performance
CAR Magazine road test October 1992 had topspeed of 199 km/h , 0-60 km/h in 4.47 seconds , 0-80km/h in 7.22 seconds , 0-100 km/h in 10.88 seconds , 0-120 km/h in 15.56 seconds all from 1796 cc with 85 kw at 5500 rpm and 165 nm at 4250 rpm . ( e30 316i had 1600 cc with 75 kw )
316i had 1.8 litre 8 valve motor , 318i had 1.8 litre 16 valve motor and 318is had 1.9 litre 16 valve motor .
318is is not bad , 320 gutless , 325 good if kept over 4000 and 328 torques the show !!

Uhm both the engines used in the e36 318i (M40B18 and M43B18) were both 8V SOHC engines, it was only the is's that came with the 16V DOHC engines.

As far as I know the e36 316i used the M40B16 engine from 1990 to 1993 and the M43B16 engine from 1993 to 1998, the M40 one had 74kW (141Nm) and the M43 one had 75kW (150Nm).

Edit: the early (1998-2001) e46 316i (we didn't get this one in SA) and 318i used the same engine, the M43TUB19. (which was also a 8V SOHC engine)

Well my E36 316i has the M40B18.. in it :) and its a 1992. guess mine is special :) As well as having disk brakes all round & ABS... whereas our 1993 316i had drums in the rear & no ABS

Mine does,nt have abs or discs in the back, does anyone know where I could get a brake upgrade for the car and what it costs as the braking is a bit poor ?

You could get yourself a set of e46 330i front brakes, that would be proper brake upgrade, but to do this you would also need at least 17" wheels to fit over the brakes, otherwise you could always look at getting a set of 328 or 325 brakes that should also be a pretty decent upgrade. I am not sure if an upgrade will be possible for the rear brakes, would probably need to change the whole hub.

Thanks for all the advise, the problem I have is that the car doesn't stop quick enough and if you push the pedal to hard, the right fron wheel locks

I'm confused with all this info going around. I have a 1996 e36 318i with the M42 motor. -t's a multivalve motor. The owners manual states it is a 103kw powerplant.

Seats covered say R5000 or so - check scrapyards for stock .
Brakes - mission to fit abs - My e36 325i can brake from 180 or so that the cd jumps - speed humps at 60 cd plays ok ! Would expect 325i or 328i ventilated discs and calipers to be bolt on upgrade .
Rear has disc with drum inside for handbrake .
Jandre , 103 kw same for 1.8 and 1.9 16 valve , only torque different .
