1992 525i problems

Hi Guys.

I have a quick question on my e34 525i, this car has the multivalve engine, not the vanos, what could cause it to be sluggish, even my 1988 merc 23e auto was faster and that does not seem right?

also, i filled the tank up to 60litres and i have drive from thursday morning till this afternoon, maybe 50km and its already sitting on 25litres, is this car supposed to be that heavy on fuel ?, the fuel pump has been modified to run from a switch by the previous owner, everytime i stop or idle in traffic the car smells of fuel and its a strong smell, cant find any leaks ?

Couple of checks

1. Check the fuel pump they like to split at the top round the crimping.
2. Check for air leaks on intake
3. Check idle regulator could be stuck open which would mess up the fuel/air ratio.
4. Check the hot wire air mass meter may have a broken wire which would be visable.
