160KW 2006 E90 330d

Hi everyone,

I bought a 2006 E90 330d about two months ago, only to discover last night while mulling over a couple of SA BMW forums that BMW SA in their infinite wisdom decided to detune the M57D30TU2 engine to 160KW and 480Nm in this model. From what I've read, they upped it to 170KW and 500Nm in late 2007. Before I bought the car, just about every resource I could find mentioned that the pre-LCI E90 330d's all had 170KW. Needless to say, I was somewhat disappointed to discover that my 330d only has 160KW.

Look, it's certainly no slouch, I love seeing the looks on GTi owner's faces when they realise that they've just been thumped by a diesel. It's just frustrating that knowing all other 2005-2006 E90s are pushing out 170KW but the SA versions are only 160KW.

Is it possible to re-flash my 2006 model with the software from the 2008 model in order to get the 170KW? I'd prefer to keep everything as stock as possible and use the BMW rather than 3rd party software. If it's not possible, can the E90 ECU be flashed with 3rd party software or does a chip have to be piggy-backed in order to control the ECU? I'm just looking to do a software update, not performance exhausts, hot cams etc etc..

Any recommendations for tuning houses that can do this? I'm in the Randburg/Sandton area.

Cheers!

All 3 of them 3rd party tuners. You can go search for each of their Facebook pages and get their contact details.

Have seen some E90 330d's doing close to 700nm on the wheels down in durban with software, downpipe and intake.

This is interesting as I also have read up on the E90 330's petrol and diesels before I bought mine.

I am always thinking of did I make a mistake buying the 330i instead of the diesel but this is extremely interesting as I thought the standard 330d was pushing a heavy punch but at 160kW I am glad I took my 190kW one.

:fencelook: but then I have seen people on this forum with 330d's that will blow my car out of the park with their diesels. :blueCry: :hammerhead:

I am dead sure with some minor tweaks and with some help from the "tractor" community on the forum you will pass the 160kW very soon. Don't stress, tuning that guy you will have a EVEN BIGGER smile then you have now. 160kw is a number and not what the car can do

i am guessing that you have not taken the opportunity to search the forum for related information.

I was not aware that the pre-facelift was increased to 170kw. I am am aware that the facelift(2010+) is 180kw. Where did you find this info?

You will be much happier with a remap and DPF removal... there are a few tuners available, best you do your research and read others experiences on their specific threads.

I also seem to think that all pre-LCI E90 330d's had the same output, only the new motors on the LCI got all that extra oomph! FWIW, the pre-LCI 330d isn't all that lacking to begin with. Great combination of power, flexibility and economy!

BMW now offers revised 320d and 330d models, and while power and torque are up, fuel consumption remains unchanged.

The diesel units offered on the 3 Series range have previously been restricted to accommodate inferior quality fuel, but BMW SA has announced that it will lift this restriction on diesel models sold locally.

Power up

The BMW 330d now boasts 170 kW of power at 4 000 r/min and 500 Nm of torque between 1 750 r/min and 2 750 r/min. This allows it to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

Previous versions of the BMW 330d delivered 160kW and 480Nm, whilst acceleration from rest to 100km/h took 6.9 seconds with top speed pegged at 246 km/h.

In the same vein, the 320d also benefits from increased output, now producing 130 kW at 4 000 r/min and 350 Nm of torque at 2 000 r/min. Performance is up, too; the new version sprints from 0 - 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds and hits a top speed of 230 km/h compared with the previous version's 8.1-second sprint and 227-km/h top speed.

Power and torque figures on the previous version were 125 kW and 340 Nm.

Quoted fuel consumption figures remain at 6.5 l/100 km for the 330d and 5.5 l/100 km for the 320d.

Sport Edition

In addition to the power gains for the 3 Series diesels, BMW SA has also announced that it is releasing a Sport Edition for the entire 3 Series range.

Only 300 units will be produced between June and September 2008 and the model will be differentiated from current M Sport models in a number of ways.

Apart from a sporting suspension set-up, the M Sports Package featured as standard on this model includes M Aerodynamics Package. This comes with modified bumpers and side-sills, sports seats, an M leather steering wheel, fog lamps on the four-cylinder models, and aluminium interior trim.

Standard equipment also includes new 18-inch wheels bearing the BMW Motorsport logo. They are, after all, identical to the wheels used on BMW's World Touring Car championship campaigner…

Other features are "sport edition" embossing on the backrest of the front seats, aluminium door entry sills bearing the same words, while an Extended Light Package and Hi-Fi Loudspeaker System.

The Sport Edition will only be available in three colours, Ruby Red Metallic and Status Grey Metallic (125 units each), and Crimson Red (50 units).

Sport Edition models and the more powerful diesels are available at BMW dealerships immediately.

Prices standard list price including the Sport Edition package
320i - R 320 000
323i - R 334 000
325i - R 363 000
330i - R 418 500

Thanks everyone for your replies, I'm gonna contact everyone mentioned in this post and see what they come up with.

i am guessing that you have not taken the opportunity to search the forum for related information.

Yup, I should've looked harder as I see there's a lot of guys who've tuned their 330d's on this forum. There are some insane numbers these guys are getting out of that diesel! I don't really want to tune the living c**p out of it, not too keen on replacing my gearbox and diff a few months down the line! Just a nice boost to 170-180KW and 500-550Nm.

I am dead sure with some minor tweaks and with some help from the "tractor" community on the forum you will pass the 160kW very soon. Don't stress, tuning that guy you will have a EVEN BIGGER smile then you have now. 160kw is a number and not what the car can do

For sure!! Even as it stands, she really does push you back in your seat when it hits ~1500 RPM and the turbo kicks in. GTi owners always want to take me on when they see it's a 330d and give I them a good hiding most of the time. They always give me a hiding in my stock e36 328i though!

Hi Orcish. I have sent you a PM.

Thanks Pho3nix, I'll reply now.

I'll definitely update this thread once I've done the tune and give you all the details.
