135i- difference between N54 A/T and N55 Mdct.

I'm currently driving a E90 325i A/T m sport. I'm inlove with the 135i coupes but I'm also very careful this year about committing to a car purchase. I would like to know how big is the difference of the two in terms of the gearbox responses. I'm scared I'll buy a N54 that is slow in changing gears as my 325i. Please note this is just based on gearbox response.

There is a difference in speed and sound as the dct is a dual clutch gearbox

Although from what I have heard, the alpina flash on the gearbox sorts this out with faster shifts

Thanks, I'm really considering N54.... I'm not fussy about the dual clutch popping sound.... just as long as the car changes faster than what I currently have.

There are a few n54 Dct's around. I have one for sale. BMW still makes N54's for the Z4 35i and 35iS

I can't comment on the n54 auto but the n55 dct is awesome, really quick changes and awesome sound especially when in "Manual" mode and the sport button on

Spoke to an owner of a N54 Auto and she was complaining about the gearbox being sluggish. She put it down to being an auto so thought nothing of it. Took her for a quick TLGP in my N55 ZF and she says it's like night and day... I have not owned an older auto BMW so I can't comment. But again I would expect the DCT to be the box to have... My 2c

As far as i know, the N54 in the 135i never came with a DCT box. There are some e92 335i's with the DCT gearbox that still has the N54 motor which is a bit rare.

Although the Alpina Flash should sort that out.

I suggest go do a few test drives and see what you like.

N54 and n55 are different beasts. The dct option is only available for the 1 series in the n55 derivative and not in the n54.

The only dcts that came in n54 is the later model e92 and the z4. If you have no intention of modding the car and you extending the motorplan then I would go n55 dct.

As other have said, the aplina gearbox software really makes the n54 that much more special. Gear changes are so much faster when in sports or manual mode...ots actually like night and day. It's by far the cheapest and best mod I've done to my n54 and Gert from OBDWORX is the guy to speak to get it done for you if you based in JHB.

Good luck with the search bri. ..hope we have helped.

I thank you very much, that's a all round lesson.... I'm specifically looking at 135i N54. I was just scared the gears drag but now that you have opened up about Gert, I think for my budget I'll start digging the market in a month or so to see what I can get.

I have had both the 135i with the N54 and N55. Would have sworn that the N54 had DCT because it was lighting fast but also my daily has a auto N52 and that thing is slower than slow. So I could be bias because anything feels faster. The N54 banged on gear changes and everything. Always just thought it was a DCT.
