N54 block had steel inserts where n55 full aluminium. Under normal or slightly modded nothing to be worried about in either. The advantage with one turbo will be less underbonnet heat. :thumbs:

Block on the n54 had cast iron cylinder liners for more strength.This is why this block is used in the higher performance models.:thumbs:

Guys here's some food for thought why did bmw use the n54 in their 1M's
Surely if the n55 was superior they would have used that in the 1M

Don't agree totally with this. I think it was more to do with timing Cos the 1M was already being developed as the N55 was launched and it only made business sense for them to use this engine cos they had already had the performance pack developed for N54 and not on the 55 to give them the additional 25kw. They save where ever they can.
