N54 block had steel inserts where n55 full aluminium. Under normal or slightly modded nothing to be worried about in either. The advantage with one turbo will be less underbonnet heat.

The N55 also features cylinder liners made from cast iron

Congrats!
Which do you guys rate is more audible in terms of exhaust M135 or 135i!
I haven't heard the M135i give it the full beans, as i have the 135i!

Guys here's some food for thought why did bmw use the n54 in their 1M's
Surely if the n55 was superior they would have used that in the 1M
Only the best for their M cars
Makes you think doesn't it

Don't agree totally with this. I think it was more to do with timing Cos the 1M was already being developed as the N55 was launched and it only made business sense for them to use this engine cos they had already had the performance pack developed for N54 and not on the 55 to give them the additional 25kw. They save where ever they can.

From my experience the N55 is louder from cold start but is a lot quieter at idle and acceleration than the N54.

In my opinion the N54 exhaust sounds much better, no wonder BMW synthesized the sound into the cabin on the M135i.
