Your going to have to get a little scientific with placement. Try sticking a few pieces of string about 2 inches apart from each other in the areas you want to vent. This will better tell you whats going on with the airflow there. If you go too close to the windcreen you will probably start hitting an area of high pressure which will then push air in creating all kinds of turbulant air problems inside the engine as it hits the air coming in from the front.
What you want is lots of cold air coming in the front, and having an easy place for the hot air to vent out placing it cleanly into the airstream without causing any turbulance. Dunno how the engine is cooled on this car if turbo heat it dumped downwards or what, be seeing as though BMW do sell upgrades on the cooling system would make you belive that there is room for improvement.
Cheap cooling tip of the day. I know some guys in the turbo crowd have had some minor temperature decreases by removing the bonnet from weatherstriping to allow more air into the engine bay. I just hope your hinges are strong.
