135 using oil

Hello to all

I have a 2011 135i dct. This morning I pull out and
get a message
oil level low.

10132 km on the clock and she needs 1L OF OIL!!!

Does this sound right???
Took it down to bmw and the SA says no problem its about right, thats why M/P pays for the topup at 10k, opened a job and put in a litre of oil.

Do they use a lighter oil for the first 20000km and then move to regular oil at the first service??

Any comments??

Yes, that's right. The engine uses oil within the first 10000km's. After this the oil will last.

I had to put a litre at about 8000km's. Havnt added anymore since then, except an oil change on the 20000km service. The car is now on 59800km's.

You use the same oil

That's fine, yours was just quicker to "run in". Now it will be ok for a long time

you also forgot to mention that your car has not used a drop of fuel in the past 12 months either....

Okay well i had the same problem my car kept saying it needed oil and only once did it actually need. they troubleshot the problem and it ended up being a software glitch and the newest DME software cured it.

The car should need 1 top up before your first service

I got this over the weekend when it sounded off and said it needs 1L and the level was sitting @ 1/4

I checked it again yesterday and the level showed that it was halfway again :S

there are two reasons it will ask for oil,

1) BMW change the service intervals on the N54/N55, there services now have longer intervals therefore a top up will not be a problem at the dealership

2) Both the N54/N55 have a problem where the oil is pushed through to the air flow. More the N54. I suggest if you plan on keeping the car for a long period of time you should get an oil catch can and every 6 months empty the can. You will will see where your oil is going two.

I suggest just keeping a 1 liter oil bottle with you and just top it up your self, for a DIY PM me i will tell you how.

Yep, catch can is something I would install if I had a x35i...

The same oil M cars use like the m3s and m5s etc? I had a 330i before and use 5w30, if thats the case guess I have to get more oil.

Castrol 10w 60

I'd also recommend 5W-30 / 5W-40.

Lower the W rating the quicker it reaches a high viscosity when cold, therefore lubricating your engine better = engine longeivity. A '0W' you'd probably only use in near-freezing conditions. However in order to create such a high viscocity index when cold, it contains more additives which, in turn, break down quicker at high temperatures creating sludge - so best avoided unless absolutely required.

I think the higher the latter number the better the oil's viscosity at high temperatures. 5W-40 is pretty common and a decent synthetic (Shell / Castrol etc) - not too pricey and sufficient for most uses. 'Red Line' come highly recommended from forums I've visited and give stats on their various products: http://www.redlineoil.com/Products.aspx?pcid=21 which might help a little in deciding what's best for your needs.

Actually after giving all of this some thought, the 10W-60 would be ideal if you don't live in a very cold climate. Less additives, withstands higher temps and has a far higher viscocity index when hot - all good for track days. I see recommended for the M cars - I must try to find some of this, probably quite pricey!

I live in Durban so not as cold climate as say gauteng. I picked up a 5litre castrol 10w60 for my fathers m5 for R320 which is cheap considering where I got it before was R540!!! R220 cheaper. Will rather find out from mp what oil they have been using as I don't want to mix grades. I have both 5w30 castrol and 10w60 in the garage at the moment. Apparent MP doesn't cover top ups? I would rather pay my price for oil than bmw's. Another question is how often should oil be changed cos heard the intervals are way too long and shorterns life of motor. Can one change the oil old fashion way with sump bolt? Heard new audi's have to be done in dealership as they have a machine that sucks the oil out it doesn't drain the oil fashion way? Sorry I know this is beginning to be way off topic
