Hey gents

A few weeks ago I saw Twinz say to someone "it's a pity your 335i are'nt a steptronic", while Gizmo (& others, but I'm referring to Gizmo, since he's the local BMW guru) says torque kills auto boxes.

Are there any advantages to the 135/335/536 using the steptronic box? Do these boxes give any issues?

Since the E90 6speed manual box works flawlessly with the E46, will the autobox work aswell?

I think it comes down to personal preference wrt auto/manual. I for one love manual cars, and find auto extremely boring and disconnected.

Yep, I have started spec'ing the manual conversion for my 5, manuals in my view connects you closer to the car

Yeah, I see what you guys mean, but I have to add, it's really really nice to just have to sit & do nothing aswell :)

For a daily runaround, I have to say I love my 330i auto.

The E65 will of course retain her auto box, just cause its going to be damm near impossible to change it without molesting the center console (which has no space for a gear lever, the auto lever sits on the steering column) and as the family cruiser, the auto box is awesome.

There is nothing wrong with the auto box, it depends what your application is, a toy has got to be manual in my view.

I was actually lucky enough to get the "bird" with a 4 speed manual box as well.

iluminati, remember my comment was a reply to a gum tree advert of a blue 335 (manual) for a very good price. i liked everything about the car as per the picture and specs on the advert but not the fact that it was "manual". Because i prefer a 335 in auto (personal preference) for a very specific car. My daily BMW ride is manual, and i am very happy with it as well...again my preference for my daily drive is manual and for this specific car, but auto for a 335...

Thanks Twinz. Yeah I remember the gumtree ad. I was just wondering whether the steptronic on the 335i gave some sort of advantage, since you'd rather want it with a step, but I see it's just personal preference.

Since you okes tune your 335's so heavily & the torque is higher than on a stock M3, I was just wondering if you guys don't get issues with the auto boxes, thus referring to Gizmo's comment.

Okay. I haven't had any issues with both auto boxes...it handles the TQ well.

i dnt thnk there is any issue about the 35s auto box not handling the torque
Reason being, the performance chip from bmw gives the auto about 20nm more than the manual box
So why has bmw chosen to give the auto the xtra torque.
I also chose auto for personal preference.. Just got fed up wth manual, especially in traffic.
The gear changes are quick, and in ds mode its alot of fun

also.. The fastest times on 135 and 335 have bn recorded using the step.

I prefer the step on the 335...TQ is much smoother when in DS and shifting on the paddels...down shifting is also fun....down shift on braking is great whilst downshifting to acc I find allot faster than manual...rev matching makes a big difference
