130i advice needed - current owners/experts

Hi guys
ok so im seriously thinking of upgrading my awesome ever faithfull 118i for a 130i m sport

iv looked at a few, but the 1 I seen today really caught my eye
its a silver m sport with about 80,000km on the clock
car really is immaculate and the current owner seems to have really looked after it

just 3 issues I picked
1) the rear tyres seem on their way out, should I replace with runflats or normal?

2) the 1st and 2nd gears feel much stiffer than the rest
is this normal?

3)**the big 1**although the car is silver and the owner is adamant there were no prior accidents, I picked up that the inside of the bonnet is a different colour???? more whitish colour aswell as the bonnet lifters
he says I can check with bmw that will confirm there were no accidents although this still bugs me
so if you have a silver 130 please check under your hood and report back to me plz lol

any other things I should look out for, he says the valve lifters (which is a common problem) and the clutch was replaced under motor plan

Hi Momo,
You will enjoy the 130i. I've got my 2nd one.
To answer your questions:
1) I've put normal tires on. Much better handling. The downside is that you don't have a spare wheel. I've put a pump and a puncture spray can in the boot incase needed.

2) I've got the short shift. It's different to the normal

3) get the last 7 digits of the VIN number and go to a dealership to check the history.... I think it was in an accident.

The value lifters is a common problem. It only happens on cold starts every now and then.

I think BMW only have comments on the system for incidents that they are aware of - it is quite possible than the car was not repaired by an 'approved' repairer.

Trust your instincts, walk away and check out the other fish in the sea if necessary.

Hey dude,

I have a 330i and the gearboxes are the same.

First and second gear are stiffer on mine as well. BMW makes "Drivers" gearboxes, they are generally more hardcore haha, and noisy.

With regards to the bonnet thing... if u not sure, walk away man! Ive made that mistake before. I bought my Subie without too much investigation and payed the price. You WILL regret it!

Be patient, and keep looking... your gem is out there.

Agreed with the above, they are great cars. My gearbox is also stiff. I tell my wife it's a man's car, not an appliance.

The clutch on mine was replaced at 40000kms, and the lifters at about 90000kms

The n52 motor uses an electric Waterpump and replacement on these are between 4-6k rands for parts alone, they also have no specific mileage before they fail so an aftermarket warrantee is a must if the car is outside of plan...

If the colour mismatch irks you then do your homework carefully...in sport pack they really amazing cars and goes like hell!

I actually drove the car yesterday, made the guy an offer and he accepted.
We were surpose to sort everything out today but in the morning he called me and said someone else made a better offer

The car is fine, from what I read the 130i M has stiff gears... as the gearbox oil warms up it starts feeling better. I checked history on the car, no comments or accidents. All looks good

the car is really clean but his asking 30k more than book so im sure his not gona get his asking price
he hasnt replied to my offer as yet

Take note that all the cars with metallic paint do not get the clear coat sprayed onto areas under the bonnet and inside the engine bay, hence the off white or dull appearance of the paintwork. Check any of the current F20/ F30 models and you will see what I mean. However you should still practice caution and look for accident damage

Check on the inside of the boot, it should have a similar effect?

I offered him 150k on Tuesday, apparently I was the first to drive the car after he advertised it.
