Thanks everyone for the advice, I also looked at a 320d, but I am now very scared of BMW.

You can lead a horse to the water, but you can’t make it drink...

A 320d is a remarkable car. Comparing it to your 118i is like comparing a Peugeot to a BMW unfortunately as that is what is at the heart of the two cars.

Good luck anyway man

Not going to lie, bought my 320i 5 months back - been loving the car. Ive had my fair share of things to change, granted its not as bad as this, that still doesn't change my perspective on the brand itself.

My car has done 85000km to this day, i got it at 78000km, during this time it went for its final service on m-plan, had the timing chain redone, had the coolant pipe pop off the bottle after parking, and the cherry on top of the cake - my water pump stops working at a certain point (like its just tired and goes off on a lunch break or something, i dont know)

I am looking at getting another car, however i find myself coming back to BMW because its just such a wonderful drive and comfortable car overall

Ask for advice here before making any purchase.
IMO BMW's are one of the most rigorously tested cars and have some good endurance capabilities as a result of over engineering.

I once spoke to a family member who has quite a large dealership and he mentioned that, BMW's are much more reliable compared to the other German rivals. His only issue with BMW was the cost of parts.
BTW, he is not a BMW fan, and for him to say this, was quite honest.

What you have I think, is a car that suffered some serious abuse and neglect thus causing this. Sad that you are the innocent one here. I really hope BMW steps up to play it nice with a 'goodwill claim'
Good luck buddy!
