Hi everyone

In the market to buy a 1 series. Found a 118i 2014 model for R169000 with 120k on the clock.

Need some advice on this model. I've seen some horror stories on this engine and it's issues

Hi stay away as the engine is prone to issues.

Try and look for an E90/F30 320d depending on your budget or even an E82 120d if it suits your requirements.

Hi All,

First mistake I made was buying a 118i without doing any research first. Now I am stuck with the timing chain issue, BMW has quoted me 30K to fix the issue but they aren't sure if I also need to replace the vanos gears which cost 10K each...

What do I do in this situation?? Do I fix the car and keep it hoping that the problem will be fixed or do I just sell it and put the extra 50k towards another car... stuck with this problem

First step I think get a quote from a reputable mechanic or workshop in your area - maybe tell us which area you in and members can advise who you can go to.

If the repair is more reasonable maybe go that route and try to sell the car as it will be easier to sell running and hopefully you able to recoup the cost of repair.
