Guys, my neighbour is looking to buy into BMW and was interested in a 116i. I have my concerns about the valvetronic motors on these cars. Are they good or not as i have read about too many valve stem oil seal failures, especially on the 2l motors. Any one with a 116/118i, what is your experience? Thanks for helping out. (I am advising him to buy a 120d/320d btw)

I've heard the 120d is a better idea if you're doing a lot of mileage, because short distance travel is bad for the turbo or something? I might be wrong.

I drive a 118i, the power is sufficient if you're looking for a daily car.

Are you referring to the E87 or F20, oil seal failures were common with high millage 118i & 120i E87.

The F20 cars are just perfect, wifey has the F20 116i

Short distance travel does not affect the turbo.
Your bigger problem on only short distances all the time, is the car doesn't get up to operating temp, and you will get sludge in the engine.

Tell the chap to get the 320d. The small boot on the 1 series gets old, very quickly, and there is virtually no leg room in the rear on the 1 series.

Vote the 320d, fuel economy is there, styling, performance and space.
