Which brakes should I be looking at?

Hey Guys,

Apologies for the noob question. What brands should I stick with when it comes to brake discs and pads?

My front discs and pads are about due (more the discs than the pads but I'll just do them both at once) and I've never changed my discs out of MP before.

I've provided Goldwagen with my VIN and they advised to go with Sure Brake pads and Febi Bilstein discs (Pricewas +- R2700 for pads and discs).

Does anyone have any input regarding these brands? I see mixed reviews regarding Febi Bilstein :hammerhead:

It's for a Motorsport E92 325i.

:ty: :ty:

I recently installed Surebrake discs and EBC Ultimax break pads on my 335i.

The Surebrakes discs are amazing (also made by Meyle)super impressed i paid R795 per disc from Goldwagen. No judder at all

The EBC are some of the best on the market but that being said it only cost me R750 from Star Brake and Clutch in Edenvale, R250 more than low end Deselera pads.

Bilstein are known to make decent products. Not sure about their brakes but their air shocks are basically the same as oem.

Cu: '08 E90 335i (6MT)
Ex: '01 W220 S320
Ex: '99 E39 540i (Rekt by rabbit)

Febi Bilstein make okay brakes but apart from that, I would avoid. Control arm bushes on my brother's 330i didn't even last a year, he replaced with Meyle this morning.

Issues with both the bushes and the top radiator hose, means I will avoid the brand completely, personal preference.

Febi buy from China on the basis of what is the cheapest.

Often times the Febi box will give you better use than its contents

Thanks for the input, guys. I had my doubts about Febi Bilstein and the mixed reviews have me steering away from this purchase.

I think I'll just go with S1NGH 911 / akash's recommendations.

Is it possible to change my discs to a drilled/slotted one? (I know its a 325i but I prefer the look of it with the style 313 :fencelook: )

Drilled or Slotted will do no more than cost more money, drilled discs also tend to develop cracks

Goldwagen stock Surebrake discs made by Meyle, i have them on now for 2weeks and very impressed so far.

Check with Imcomex in Centurion. They had Meyle discs, was around R900 a disc for the 335i should be a lot cheaper for the 325i

Call Star Brake and Clutch and get a price on EBC Ulitmax pads, it may cost about R100 or R150 more than the Textar, maybe even the same price, for an E90 325i, but well worth it.

hi guys, any recommendation on front break pads for F30 320d? and how do I reset the warning after replacing the pads and sensor? Planning to DIY this if I don't get a reasonable quotation

Recommendations on brand as per posts above.

1. Without pressing the brake/clutch, press the start/stop button
2. Wait for the service reminder to disappear
3. Press and hold the odometer reset button. You will notice your trip meter reset and then go back to the value it once was. Keep holding for a couple more seconds

At this point, service values that can be reset will come up. Use the odometer reset button to scroll through the menu.

4. At the value you want to reset, press and hold the odometer reset button. "Reset possible" will change to "Reset?"
5. Press and hold odometer reset button again until value is reset
6. Press the start/stop button to start car or turn off car

Interesting, I didn't know that cracking was an issue. Guess I'll just go with the 'normal' ones then to be on the safe side.

Out of interest, do you have drilled/slotted discs and have you had any issues?

Thanks Akash!
Imcomex have the parts.. will most probably get from them..

Star Brake was offering TRW pads indicating that they are officially being used in BMW's.. are they any good?

Thanks rash777! Will give Alan a call for the fitment..

I've never heard of TRW.

Check if Sun Auto in Randburg has Textar.

so from personal experience, my current front pads are the Febi one's from goldwagen. Avoid them.. it's not worth paying the cheaper price for them. I haven't even done 5k on them, already squealing and worn down. and make a crap load of brake dust. and they pretty hard.

i won't buy them again.
